About the Position
Located in the beautiful Secwépemcul’ecw (Shuswap) region of British Columbia, the Shuswap Area
Family Emergency Society (SAFE Society) is a registered charitable society that provides a broad
spectrum of services to persons who are impacted by abuse. The SAFE Society works from an
intersectional feminist and trauma-informed philosophy. The Society’s mission is “ending violence in the
Shuswap.”
We are seeking caring individuals with experience in the social service sector to work casual shifts as a
Crisis Intervention Support Worker at the Transition House located in Salmon Arm. A diploma in Human
Service Work or equivalent training and experience is an asset.
Job Summary
A Crisis Intervention Support Worker is responsible for providing support counselling to women who are
survivors of abuse - physical, emotional, financial, spiritual or sexual - in the Transition House setting.
The successful applicant must be able to work independently, as a team player, and effectively guide
people through crisis situations. A casual position is a great way to gain experience in this field of work

and opportunity to apply for permanent internal positions, should they come up.

  • Works with diverse populations, so experience/aptitude an asset as well as a commitment to

inclusive, culturally appropriate, decolonizing, and trauma-informed practices.

  • Provides referrals and information, so knowledge of local resources and social supports an asset.
  • This position often requires independent work so the ability to plan, organize, and prioritize

projects and tasks is important, as well as the ability to take effective notes, keep track of action

items, and share updates with colleagues and supervisors.

  • Stressful situations are part of this work, so the ability to remain calm in stressful situations is

critical. Crisis intervention, de-escalation, and mental health first aid training are an asset.

  • Covid-19 wage top-ups after completion of probationary period, as applicable/available.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in a directly related field or equivalent experience gained from a

combination of direct experience, training and education.

  • Minimum 1 year recent experience in a comparable field, such as work in a transition house,

crisis intervention, counselling work, work with children or survivors of abuse.

  • Satisfactory criminal record review from the RCMP.
  • Valid BC Driver’s License and use of a reliable vehicle. Expenses are paid where driving for work

is required.

  • Have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Able to lift and carry donations.

Schedule
Casual/on call staff cover shifts for permanent staff and, as such, the hours will vary with no guaranteed
minimums. Transition House staffing is needed 24 hours per day, 365 days per year so applicants must
be available to work a variety of shifts including overnight (awake), weekday dayshifts, weekends,
evenings, and holidays as needed.
Performance Standards
Reports to Transition House Management Team & Executive Director (or designate) and adheres to the
constitution, philosophy, policies and procedures of the Society.

partners. This position works collaboratively with CBVS and other program staff.
