UIC is seeking a Data Analyst to join our Student Affairs Technology team. This role focuses on providing solutions to data analytics questions within Student Affairs (SA). This role will be primarily consulting with SA staff to design and develop solutions for SA units. The Data Analyst is also responsible for administering campus analytics tools as well as gathering and analyzing data from multiple databases and sources; and developing and presenting reports and visualizations for a variety of audiences. This role will also provide strategic and actionable insights in support of the technical and operational efforts of the Student Affairs Technology team. This position reports to the Assistant Director of Data within Student Affairs Technology

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor Degree within Computer Science or closely related field of study
  • Minimum 1 years of professional IT experience within Database Design and Administration which includes Demonstrated experience in the design, creation and implementation of databases, including data models, logical and physical databases, data dictionaries and schemas, validation checks and data security.
  • One (1) year of experience in gathering, analyzing, and visualizing data for forecasting and/or reporting.
  • One (1) year experience in data analytics extracting data using data management software, including SQL
  • One (1) years of experience analyzing and synthesizing complex data sets and producing highly readable, informative reports with visualizations.
  • Experience in technology at an institution of higher education or equivalent.
  • Experience translating business requirements into technical requirements in terms of data warehousing, reporting and predictive analytics tools.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Excellent oral and written communications skills
  • Ability to cleanse data to prepare the data for further analysis.
  • Ability to perform data analysis to tell a story and fulfill requirements.
  • Ability to utilize scripting languages such as SQL, R or Python to acquire data from multiple data sources
  • Knowledge of the systems and operations used within the areas and departments of responsibility
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a team to accomplish projects or initiatives
  • Demonstrated customer service excellence
  • Ability to think strategically at a high level and recommend solutions
  • Ability to contribute strongly to cross-functional groups assigned to tasks or project work.
  • Proven knowledge of the Enterprise Data Warehouse
  • Proven experience using analytical tools to create visualizations.
  • Ability to troubleshoot advanced issues with data analysis tools
  • Ability to use data modeling to define and analyze data requirements needed to support the business processes

Responsibilities:

  • Providing customers data driven output based on their request as provided by manager or business analyst. Analyzing functional and performance issues, collaborate with peers on possible solutions and implement corrective actions in a timely manner.
  • Working with stakeholder to ensure data requirements are feasible and to further understand business objectives.
  • Identifying data sources with minimal input from subject matter experts and compile data sources required to complete request. Writing scripts to extract data from data sources.
  • Preprocessing data by performing data cleansing to identify outliers, missing values, and data fields which needs further transformation, to prepare the data for further analysis. Performing data analysis/visualization to answer the business questions using appropriate tool.
  • Completing individual projects and tasks assigned by supervisor on time with quality. Managing projects at the divisional or team level and drive deliverables and results by designated deadlines.
  • Analyzing existing processes, workflows, opportunities and providing solutions to improve business processes.
  • Gathering technical requirement for projects and tasks by working with customer to determine needs.
  • Testing business requirements against actual solutions.
  • Automating business processes.
  • Providing updates on a regular basis to team on status of projects or tasks assigned.
  • Providing customer assistance with reporting tools, software, and reports.
  • Delivering excellent customer service by responding to requests in person, on the phone, or via email in a timely, polite, and professional manner.
  • Working independently with cross-functional units, teams, and individuals to provide the unique data needs to support Student Affairs.
  • Building relationships with customer community by seeking out other analysts in their field, proactively communicating relevant information and discussing their needs, initiatives, and service levels through periodic meetings.
  • Managing expectations of customers to resolve customer satisfaction issues.
  • Identifying trends and patterns that could benefit the organization. Interacting with various teams within Engineering IT Shared Services to ensure outstanding service delivery to customers.
  • Implementing centralized services where practical and align them to the unique needs of unit or customers.
  • Working within cross-functional teams, with limited authority for final decision making.
  • Acting as a technical and institutional resource for other data analysts, providing training and advice as needed.
  • Manage day-to-day office operations. Interview, orient, and mentor staff to meet departmental and organizational needs.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
