Description:

  • Executive Level 1: $113,288 - $130,959 (plus 15.4% super)
  • locations: Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Darwin, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney
  • multiple ongoing and non-ongoing positions, full-time or part-time, flexible working arrangements.
    The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is looking to fill various Assistant Director (Executive Level 1 classification) roles to lead teams of data analysts across multiple areas at the ABS.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR (SELECTION CRITERIA)

We are looking for inspirational leaders who want to contribute to the delivery of ABS’ statistical program to share insights and data about the nation which enables informed decisions and research.

All candidates are expected to be able to demonstrate the following skills, qualities and experience:

  • strong conceptual and analytical skills, including the ability to critically assess information and develop innovative solutions
  • demonstrated ability to build a positive team environment where team members work cooperatively and collaboratively to deliver outcomes
  • ability to understand organisational objectives and align operational requirements accordingly
  • ability to adapt and work effectively in times of uncertainty or major change
  • effective oral, written and communication skills, including the ability to collaborate and present on complex issues with internal and external stakeholders
  • ability to liaise with a broad range of stakeholders and nurture positive working relationships to achieve outcomes
  • strong program or project management process knowledge and experience
  • at least three years’ experience in a data or statistical role.

Desirable:

  • academic qualifications in statistics, economics, econometrics, mathematics, environmental sciences, psychology/social sciences or other field with a strong quantitative focus is highly desirable
  • for some roles - experience with one or more statistical programming languages such as Python, R, SAS or SQL.

Responsibilities:

Common responsibilities across all the available Assistant Director roles may include:

  • leading a team of analysts to analyse data from statistical collections or administrative sources to produce statistical outputs accompanied by insightful narratives
  • providing statistical leadership to enhance the quality of data and insights: this may include exploring new data sources and driving improvements to methods and processes
  • providing high-level conceptual leadership and advice on statistics: this may involve expertise in statistical frameworks, classifications, standards and concepts and/or domain expertise
  • applying critical thinking and reasoning to anticipate and analyse issues to develop logical conclusions
  • building and maintaining a range of stakeholder relationships within and outside the ABS, representing your area in corporate and strategic meetings and discussions to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes
  • delivering complex and time sensitive projects or programs of work
  • driving a culture of learning and innovation by supervising a team with a focus on people development and building capability to deliver high quality outcomes
  • fostering an environment of continuous improvement, including facilitating access to professional development and training as required
  • developing and managing programs or projects using agile or other project management principles.
