Description:

Mowi Genetics is responsible for delivering genetic improvement of the Mowi strain of Atlantic salmon to Mowi production units, and implementing research programs in genetics to drive the breeding program to greater efficiency in response to production requirements. The position as Data scientist is an exciting opportunity to be part of a growing team, working in the challenging and fast-moving area of genetics applied to animal production. You will be working alongside our research partners as well as our Global R&D and Technical Department and Production teams to help deliver genetic progress from the breeding department to the salmon growing environments. The role will include managing, analysing and archiving large volumes of phenotypic, genetic and genomic data and linking it to other extensive databases in Mowi.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

The position requires a bachelor level degree in the field of computational science or data management, with the following required and preferred skills:

  • Competence in programming languages Python and SQL. Experience with R and Spark is also considered advantageous
  • Extensive experience with database management
  • Experience with cloud storage computing considered advantageous including Microsoft Azure and Databricks
  • Fluent in English and preferable Norwegian

Responsibilities:

  • Quality checking and error correction of ‘raw data’ collected in the field
  • Management of global pedigree and phenotype databases
  • Management of genomic database (SNP and sequence data)
  • Managing and developing cloud infrastructure for data storage and analysis (Microsoft Azure and Databricks)
  • Extraction of data from databases and preparation of input files for downstream analyses
  • Development of new data handling routines and data collection approaches
  • Software tool and app development
  • Communication with team members on sites and interaction with third party suppliers
  • Integrating genetics database with other farming databases
  • Managing traceability of genetics through the production chain and delivering data to national traceability databases
