Description:

JOB SUMMARY:

The Dean of Academics works with the Principal, Academic Officers and Assistant Principal in the management of curriculum and instruction. The Dean of Academics serves as the point of contact for all instructional staff, students, and parents for their specific program. The Dean of Academics provides guidance to instructors to ensure that each course is appropriate for students in the regular and summer programs. The Dean of Academics sets a professional tone for the program and serves as a positive role model for staff and students. The Dean of Academics provide for the systemic study and analysis of the teaching-learning process and the development, implementation, and evaluation of instructional programs; Provide for the development, alignment, and implementation of quality curriculum to enhance student achievement; Plan and provide professional development for teachers and staff.
The Dean of Academics works as a part of the instructional team in order to meet the needs of all students. The building of relationships are a critical component of this learning environment, the team works together to identify student needs that may be barriers to success. Teachers collaborate with team members to analyze different means of meeting student needs and communicates with students, parents, and other team members about student progress and plans for next steps.

Dean of Academics Responsibilities:

  • Coach and train teachers to utilize appropriate research-based instructional strategies to meet students learning needs;
  • Provide teachers with the instructional support, to provide targeted interventions, modifications, and adaptations to all students with disabilities in accordance with their Individual Education Plans;
  • Reviews lesson plans and provide teachers with the instructional support to deliver targeted interventions, modifications and adaptations to English Language Learners in accordance with each ESOL student’s language proficiency level and their identified instructional needs;
  • Directs and clarifies expectations and responsibilities of instructional staff through training activities and immediate feedback
  • Ensures that all instructional staff participate in the across schools Professional Learning Communities sessions and in-house Professional Learning opportunities.
  • Ensures that all instructional staff participate in the chartering district’s approved content-area professional development opportunities
  • Supports instructional staff, encourage collaboration between instructors and teaching assistants, and gather information through classroom observations
  • Work in a supportive and collaborative fashion with district personnel;
  • Provide leadership in the identification, evaluation, and selection of instructional programs, strategies, resources, and equipment with regard to increased student achievement;
  • Works with School Administration to observe and evaluate the classroom environment.
  • Ensures that the instructional team administers formative and summative assessments including baseline, benchmark and statewide assessments as per the school and district’s assessment calendars.
  • Ensures that the school implements a Direct Instruction cycle that is consistent with the state’s assessment calendar and aligns with the NorthStar Non-negotiables;
  • Coordinates and implements an instructional data cycle that incorporates consistent data analysis that is then used to formulate instructional decisions;
  • Ensures that all teachers maintain accurate student attendance record of all Direct Instruction Classes in the in-house Student Information System (eSchoolware);
  • Ensures that teachers maintain academic portfolios for students in Direct Instruction classes
  • Provides information to the principal regarding teachers’ effectiveness in lesson planning, student learning, and classroom management;
  • Participates in school based leadership opportunities (i.e. team meeting, Lead teacher meeting, etc.).
  • Ensures teachers are organized, manage their time well and are using the appropriate research-based curriculum that conforms with conforms with NorthStar, State and District guidelines.
  • Other duties as deemed necessary by the Principal;
