The P&CS Innovation & Strategy team will lead the design and development of new production and store capabilities, processes, and technologies by activating end-to-end systems thinking and problem solving.
The Tryer Center will serve as the enterprise hub for accelerating and incubating early-stage end-to-end innovation. The team will integrate business strategy, measurement, and agile problem solving. This job contributes to Starbucks’ success by guiding business decisions through experimental design and analysis and discovering and sharing insights that deliver stakeholder outcomes. The focus of the decision scientist role will be to apply research, statistics, and experimental design principles for synthesis, analysis, and implementation of data into models, dashboards, and storytelling presentations that support Starbucks innovation initiatives. This position partners with a cross-functional team of innovation leaders supporting strategic initiatives that help shape and define the future of Starbucks.

As a decision scientist for Tryer Center and Testing, you will…

  • Data Preparation: Extracts data from various databases; performs exploratory data analysis, cleanses, massages, and aggregates data.
  • Data Visualization: Works under consultative or self-initiated direction to assess and produce relevant, standard, or custom information (reports, charts, graphs, and tables) from structured data sources by querying data repositories and generating the associated information. Familiar with common communication, data presentation, and storytelling skills.
  • Data Manipulation and Modeling: Ability to procure and manipulate large-scale, complex data from a variety of systems (Azure, Oracle, etc.). Has experience reshaping data to ensure it is in the correct structure for analysis, filtering, and removal and inspection of outliers. Has demonstrated experience with cloud tech for data and analytics solutions (Azure, AWS).
  • Data Methodologies and Analysis: Applicable business experience and the ability to handle and maintain the confidentiality of highly sensitive information required for statistical analysis and modeling techniques, including descriptive and predictive analysis (ex. Regression, cluster, factor, survival, drivers, anomaly detection, correlation, etc.), and dashboard building with proficiency in Excel, SQL, Python, Tableau/PowerBI, and experimental design platforms. Uses data methodologies and skills in accordance with business applicability and insights operationalization.
  • Business Acumen: Has working knowledge and understanding of Starbucks business and general business acumen. Requires mentoring and guidance, but over time can make more of the connection between data and business applicability.
  • Insights Operationalization: Has experience presenting complex technical material to a non-technical audience in an approachable way. Provides analytic support (documentation, data transformations, algorithms, etc.) to implement rules and model insights and recommendations into business processes.
  • Collaboration and Knowledge-Share: Demonstrates outstanding collaboration skills with colleagues at varying organizational levels; understands decision sciences and advanced analytics and brings others along effectively.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: BA/BS with concentration in quantitative discipline - Statistics, Math, Comp Science, Engineering, Econ, Quantitative Social Science, or similar discipline
  • Minimum 1 year experience within data analysis field or discipline
  • Ability to apply knowledge of multidisciplinary business principles and practices to achieve successful outcomes in cross-functional projects and activities
  • Ability to handle and maintain confidentiality of highly sensitive information
  • Proficiency with SQL, familiarity with Python and R
  • Working knowledge of statistics (descriptive, predictive, etc.)
  • Business experience with several data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, PowerBI)
  • Possess a strong bias for action and a growth mindset

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3-5 years experience within data analysis field or discipline
  • 1-2 years experience of data engineering
  • Experience in AI/ML for generating insights across quantitative and qualitative data
  • Experience in managing at scale including process automation, and anomaly detection and alert creation
  • Operations analytics experience preferred.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Retail, customer loyalty, and eCommerce experience, preferred
  • Logistics, supply chain experience, preferred
  • Experience with AI/ML and complex predictive modeling, preferred

The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, and internal equity. At Starbucks, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at the high end of the range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate.
