Description:

Alder Hey Children’s Hospital cares for over 330,000 children, young people and their families every year. As one of Europe’s biggest and busiest children’s hospitals, we treat everything from common illnesses to highly complex and specialist conditions. We are recognised as a Centre of Excellence for children with cancer, cardiac, spinal and brain disease. We have been designated by the Department of Health as a national centre for craniofacial surgery and epilepsy surgery. Alder Hey is also a designated Paediatric major trauma unit.
As a result of career progression of the existing post holder we have an exciting opportunity for an experienced and motivated individual to join the Alder Hey finance team.
The role of the divisional accountant will be supporting the Community & Mental Health division within the trust. The post is advertised at full time but will also consider applicants looking for part-time hours.
The primary purpose of the role is to provide the Finance Business Partners with support to meet the Trust’s statutory reporting requirements and deadlines in line with Finance Policy and Procedure’s. Working with the Finance Business Partners, the post holder will develop and produce information to support accurate and timely monthly performance reports for presentation at service meetings and to feed into the Trusts position for internal and external corporate reporting.
You will ensure that the Associate Chief Operating Officer, Divisional Directors, Service Managers & Budget holders within the Trust receive full financial advice and support to meet the Trust Statutory targets to give an accurate report of performance. You will play a pivotal role in ensuring the divisions have the necessary support and information for decision making as well as ensuring the divisions and the wider Trust develop financial awareness. To facilitate this, we will expect the post holder to work a hybrid pattern to include a minimum of 2 days in the office but being flexible to increase to 3 or more days should the business needs demand this.
You will be a proactive and highly motivated, CCAB or CIMA qualified accountant, with post qualification experience, with strong IT skills and competent in the use of Microsoft Office.

To take responsibility for analysing income (including SLAM activity) and expenditure, identifying variances, investigating where necessary and providing high level reporting to the Finance Business Partner for review. High quality information is provided to Finance Business Partners for review.

  • To work closely with the Income, Costing and Commissioning team to understand ERF activity and SLR data in order the support the divisional managers to increase productivity and reduce costs.
  • Preparing the divisional finance reports for the Division, including divisional Board, Resource and Business Development Committee (RABD) and SDG reports.
  • Attend monthly meetings with the Deputy Director of Finance and Associate Director of Finance to explain the financial position of the Division. Ensuring that any queries that have been raised are answered.
  • To provide the division, business units and the trust with comprehensive financial information and advice relating to all service aspects to enable and support managers to plan and monitor delivery of their services efficiently and effectively.
  • To arrange and attend monthly meetings with Divisional Managers to go through their financial position at the month end advising and make recommendations on how the budget for the financial year can be used effectively. For example, costing and analysis for the decision-making process.
  • To lead and be responsible for reviewing cost-based management information for the Division to ensure that the cost of delivering the service is accurately reflected. To undertake benchmarking to enable comparison and evaluation when necessary.
  • To identify cost pressures within the Division monthly and escalate as appropriate.
  • To oversee the preparation of divisional budgets in accordance with guidelines and deadlines provided by the Director of Finance
  • To prepare all supporting documentation of the Trusts budget setting process. Ensuring that all relevant factors are incorporated. To attend meetings with Department Heads to agree rolling budgets and ensure that cost pressures for the coming year are highlighted and costed throughout the overall process.
