Are you an experienced Paediatric Critical Care Nurse seeking a new challenge? There is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and motivated nurse to join our Paediatric Critical Care management team and our Children’s Emergency Transport Service (CoMET) to cover maternity leave.
Our Paediatric Critical Care Unit based in Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham, has 14 beds comprising 8 Paediatric Intensive Care beds and 6 Paediatric High Dependency beds. We care for children under a wide range of specialities.
CoMET is the supra-regional Paediatric Critical Care Transport Service hosted by The University Hospitals of Leicester, in partnership with Nottingham University Hospital which launched in March 2017. CoMET is responsible for covering the East Midlands, providing advice and support for our 11 referring centres. The team operates a 24 hour acute transport service 7 days a week and a repatriation service in daytime hours to help create patient flow in our critical care beds within the region.
CoMET is based on a single site in Castle Donnington alongside our neonatal, adult and ECMO transport colleagues.
Applications are currently invited for nurses looking to join the Nottingham based part of this service, with successful applicants having the opportunity to work in both the PCCU in Nottingham and CoMET.
The post holder will be required to work as a member of Children’s Services nursing team, providing a high standard of clinical care and support to children and young people within the Paediatric Critical Care Unit and the Children’s Medical Emergency Transport (CoMET) Service on a 50:50 basis.
The post holder will need to have team building skills and be able to demonstrate how they motivate and lead. Evidence of clear effective communication skills and ability to work autonomously is essential. You will be required to work flexibly as a member of the PCCU and CoMET and with support of the Senior nurse team ensure that standards are maintained, evaluated, and where necessary improved. You will be expected to contribute and support the performance agendas.
You will have responsibility for the management and delivery of care within PCCU in the absence of a Band 7 Sister/Charge Nurse. You will also deputise when requested for the PCCU Senior Nurse including taking responsibility for the management of Children’s Services when delegated by the Senior Nurse/Head Nurse.
The post holder must be a Registered Sick Children’s Nurse or Registered Nurse (Child Branch) with a recognised children’s critical care qualification and at least 2 years experience as a Band 5 Nurse in a children’s critical care area. In addition they will need to hold a recognised teaching qualification.
The post holder will be based at the QMC Campus/ Castle Donington.

We are a major trauma centre and the Children’s Critical Care Unit works closely with the Emergency Department, providing front line care for trauma patients. Nottingham Children’s Hospital Critical Care provides an essential service for Neurology/Neurosurgical; Spinal/Orthopaedic; Oncology/Haematology; Respiratory; General Surgery and Rheumatology. The Hospital is also a provider of paediatric renal services for the region, which allows staff on the unit to be actively involved with kidney transplants and haemofiltration.
