Design Engineer

THE OPPORTUNITY

We are looking for a dedicated and experienced Transformer Design Engineer to join our specialised facility in Newcastle, NSW 2322. With expertise in oil (or ester) filled power transformers and familiarity with dry type transformers, you will be joining a team that specialise in the design and manufacture of new custom built transformers – as well as overhauling and rewinding customer’s existing assets. We have the capability to cater for a wide range of applications across the power, energy and mining sectors with ratings up to 75MVA and 132kV.

Your willingness to gets hands on in a manufacturing environment will be complemented by the following:

• Advanced Diploma or Degree in Electrical Engineering
• Proficient English (written and verbal)
• Strong Safety orientation
• 5 to 10 years of Experience in electrical design of Distribution, Power Transformers and dry type transformers.
• Understanding of transformer electrical design, thermal design, dielectrics, short circuit strength, transformer applications, mechanicals of transformer
• Demonstrable knowledge of IEC/AS standards and manufacturing processes related to transformer
• Fault finding and troubleshooting skills
• High level computer skills as well as strong written and verbal communication skills
• An excellent technical understanding of power transformers

The key responsibilities of this role are:

• Design, development and documentation of oil and dry type transformers.
• Preparing tendering & contract final designs / documentation using the necessary advanced knowledge of principles and practices in related practice areas; familiarity with VIT transformer design software, e.g. SAPR TON, VLN etc. an advantage.
• Involvement in refurbishment/ re-wind of older transformers.
• Interfacing with mechanical design, procurement, production, testing, suppliers and customers.
• Assisting in continuous improvement initiatives by using your knowledge and skills to streamline procedures that will raise the bar on our product and the systems.
