The role encompasses a range of responsibilities which includes providing team leadership, design management, technical support, risk management, and taking lead of innovation initiatives.
Providing leadership to the Northern design team is a key element of responsibility to ensure design delivery is of high consistency, quality and timely, and our internal and external customer’s needs are met.
A key responsibility of the Design Manager is to ensure a balance of technical and operational support is provided by the team and review constructability of proposed designs. This requires the Design Manager to be confident in technical understanding of designs and practical elements of civil construction to optimise design for construction without compromising technical robustness. This is required to minimise risk elements associated with design, construction methodologies, post-construction evaluation and long-term maintenance.
Key result areas include:
- Technical Responsibilities: Provide leadership and management for Design Engineers delivering pavements and geometric design and build packages for various clients across the country.
- People Management & Development: Our people are our most special resource and as such we need to ensure they are valued and respected.
- Client Management and Engagement: Develop relationships with client representatives as per Customer Engagement Plan or when the opportunity arises and ensure effective customer and client service.
- Safety, Environment, Quality & Risk Management (Zero Harm): Facilitate constructability and safety workshops with construction teams and clients to ensure proposed designs are safe and buildable.
NGA PŪKENGA MATUA | IMPORTANT SKILLS
- Proven industry experience and knowledge – minimum 5 years in a technical role
- Relevant tertiary qualification (Bachelor of Civil Engineering or Similar) desired but can be replaced with skilled work experience.
- Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) or working towards chartered status.
- Proven track record as Intermediate to Senior Engineer or similar technical role for a major construction and/or consultancy business
- Extensive knowledge of industry best practices for design delivery, including some experience with minor civil, pavements and geometric design.
- Good problem-solving abilities relevant to both technical challenges and team management
- Effective communication skills and an ability to communicate complex technical issues in a clear and rigorous manner to maximise impact for both technical and operational staff
- Strong interpersonal skills applicable to internal and external relationships
- Proven ability to manage a wide-ranging client base and develop effective working relationships
- Sound commercial understanding and business acumen with regards to management of resourcing, budgets, design and operational risks
- Maintains a full Class 1 Driver’s Licence
- Has the ability to travel
