About the Role:
The Design Engineer role will support the Engineering team in Liverpool with the design and creation of technical drawings and documentation.
They will hold responsibility for Mechanical / CAD design of landers, underwater deployment systems and coastal monitoring installations. CAD models, draft design, manufacturing and assembly drawings will therefore be required for on-site and subcontracted manufacture and assembly.
This position would suit someone with experience in design engineering with a strong background in CAD design and drawing creation.
At Band 5, the role will also require the candidate to be confident in being a technical authority for all mechanical designs and be willing to undertake line management responsibilities.
About the Coastal Engineering Team:
The Coastal Engineering Team is a group of 7 engineers within the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) in Liverpool split between Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. The Team typically perform a support function for the team of coastal scientists within the ‘Marine Physics and Ocean Climate’ group. The engineers work on sensor integration, communications, energy provision, mechanical housings, tide gauges and lander design along with installation, data retrieval and maintenance.
The Liverpool site comprises an Electronics lab, CNC Machine shop and Assembly Area. Most components are manufactured and assembled on site with Engineers travelling worldwide to support installations when required.
About you
A background as a Design Engineer. Preferably in a marine or similarly technical industry.

This is a uniquely broad, hands-on role which will be well suited to an individual who is able to:

  • Support a diverse team of Engineers and Scientists, taking their ideas from concept to product in the field.
  • Design bespoke coastal and subsea fixtures.
  • Be confident sharing concepts and carrying these ideas through detailed design to manufacture.
  • Be a team player and happy to support colleagues on deployments if/when required.

At Band 5, applicants should also demonstrate the following:

  • Be confident and capable of being the technical lead when it comes to mechanical design.
  • Understand good engineering processes and be able to implement necessary changes to processes following review or feedback
  • Be comfortable line managing colleagues

Location
This position will be based in Liverpool. The centre is part of the University campus and is only a short walk from the city centre and Lime Street station.
