ONE-YEAR EXEMPT POSITION (WITH POSSIBILITY OF EXTENSION)

Nestled on the banks of the world-renowned Bulkley and Telkwa Rivers, this picturesque, historical village borders Tyhee Lake Provincial Park. Surrounded by snow-capped mountain ranges and a myriad of lakes and streams, Telkwa’s spectacular natural setting offers extensive year-round outdoor adventure and recreational opportunities.
The Village of Telkwa is seeking a dynamic individual to take on the role of Development Services Coordinator (Planner). Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer and the Approving Officer, this person will be responsible for developing, reviewing and/or updating internal development approvals processes; related bylaws, policies and procedures; and overseeing planning staff, to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the Planning and Development Department. This position will also involve development of communications and training materials, templates, user guides, etc.; coaching and mentoring staff; and facilitating collaboration with externals partners and stakeholders (e.g. First Nations, other levels of government, and the development community).

Ideally, the successful candidate will:

  • possess a post-secondary degree in land-use planning, or related discipline;
  • have advanced knowledge of municipal planning, building inspections, and development services, including a sound knowledge of planning principles, practices and techniques;
  • have a minimum of five years of related professional experience in a local government setting;
  • a Registered Professional Planner with membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP);
  • a thorough understanding and working knowledge of BC legislation and regulations
  • (e.g. Community Charter, Local Government Act, Freedom of Information & Protection of Privacy Act, BC Land Titles Act, etc.);
  • demonstrated leadership skills, ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and manage hectic work demands;
  • considerable experience in preparing, municipal planning documents, bylaws policies and design guidelines, and processing subdivision development applications;
  • ability to provide community planning policy advice, analysis, observations and recommendation, with minimum supervision;
  • writing and editing professional reports, and making presentations to Council;
  • ability to establish and maintain positive, respectful, and effective working relations with a variety of internal and external entities;
  • excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • hold a valid BC driver’s license;
  • an equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
