Job Description:
This position represents a temporary full time training opportunity (theory and practicum) to prepare staff to work in the specified Island Health specialty department. As a training opportunity, this position will work closely with a Certified Diabetes Nurse Educator mentor for the duration of the training opportunity, and with limited scope of practice.
In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of Island Health (Vancouver Island Health Authority), patient and staff safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.
Reports to the Manager, Chronic Disease Management and Nutrition Therapy Services. Plans and provides direct nursing care to patients/residents in the hospital or in the community in accordance with the unit/program philosophy, competency guidelines, policies, and the BC College of Nurses and Midwives Standards for Nursing Practice in British Columbia.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Current Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) certification or eligible for CDE certification to be obtained within three years of hire.
Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN registrant.
Recent, related experience preferred. Demonstrated knowledge in the current theories, technologies and practices in the control of diabetes mellitus. Knowledge of Adult Education learning principles.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize assigned workload and set priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with a variety of internal and external contacts, including co-workers, physicians, community agency representatives, patients, residents and families.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
