Description:

The Museum has an exciting opportunity for an experienced digital professional to join the Public Engagement Division as an APS6 Digital Technical Officer in the Digital team. The Digital team is responsible for the creation and provision of engaging digital content and products for the National Museum of Australia.
The Digital team develops and publishes content for the Museum’s digital outreach and scopes, plans and manages production of interactive multimedia products for the Museum’s physical galleries.

The Digital Technical Officer will work on a range of websites and digital products, reporting to the Manager, Product. The successful applicant will:

  • Be responsible for technical production and support for the Museum’s Squiz Matrix web content management system (CMS) and other digital systems such as the Museum’s digital object labels. This will include undertaking a range of technical tasks including updating design templates, developing basic CMS functionality that meets user needs, best practice, security and accessibility standards, editing and reviewing cascading style sheets (CSS) and deploying frontend updates.
  • Coordinate more complex updates with external contractors and internal IT staff, as required. While this is not a developer role, it is expected the officer will have the capacity to undertake basic frontend development of functions in the web CMS and across other digital products.
  • Coordinate system software upgrades and be the main point of contact for troubleshooting technical issues, working closely with internal IT staff and external contractors.
  • Scope and develop new website functionality and other digital projects in consultation with the Digital team, other Museum staff and external contractors.
  • Prepare technical documentation including functional and build specifications for digital projects and maintain technical and user documentation for the website CMS and other systems.
  • Maintain the Museum’s website analytics and generate reports and statistical analysis to inform future development and for reporting purposes.
  • Develop and maintain search engine optimisation (SEO) and site search strategies for ongoing improvement. The role may at times include the supervision of other technical staff.

The ideal candidate will have strong technical and troubleshooting skills and take the initiative to develop new projects and propose solutions. They will have a good awareness of industry-wide changes and be proactive in assessing the impact on the Museum operations. The successful candidate will have excellent documentation skills and be able to analyse analytics and datasets to assess the Museum’s performance and to help inform future products.
The candidate will be a self-starter and work well with limited direction, reporting on progress at key milestones. The candidate will have good judgement in assessing technical risk and on when to seek advice from management or other specialists. The candidate will work well in a cross-disciplinary team environment and enjoy working in an open and collaborative way with colleagues.
