Description:

Cochlear is the global market leader in implant hearing solutions. Cochlear’s mission is to help people hear and be heard. Around the world, more people chose a Cochlear-branded hearing implant system than any other. A Cochlear Implant is an electronic device that is surgically implanted under the skin near the ear that restores hearing to those who suffer from severe hearing loss. It’s an incredible piece of engineering and the only product in the world that restores a sense through technology. Imagine using your experience to help people around the world to hear again. We can offer a unique opportunity to join Cochlear, an iconic Australian company, leading the world in implantable hearing solutions. Our mission is to help more people to hear.
The Opportunity
Cochlear’s Research & Technology (R&T) division advances digital and hardware technologies until they are primed for product development. Within R&T, the Algorithms and Applications (A&A) department refines concepts and ideas in algorithm development (electrical and acoustical sound coding, objective measures, clinical workflow, monitoring and troubleshooting, data science, control algorithms) and applications (user interfaces, surgical applications, clinician applications and user engagement) to a level ready for adoption into platforms for product development.

Based in Sydney, the Director Algorithms and Applications will assume a dual role, with:

  • Vertical leadership responsibility for the A&A teams based in Australia; &
  • A ‘horizontal’ position as the Cochlear Implant R&T Portfolio Manager.

Other responsibilities include…

  • Cultivate a robust and dynamic culture of innovation within the A&A team
  • Exercise leadership through influence over contributors to the A&A research portfolio who may not report directly
  • Develop and manage local research infrastructure (including those executed by external parties), ensuring it meets the evolving needs of various research programs and is compliant with Quality Standards and Cochlear’s QMS
  • Work with the R&T leadership team to ensure that appropriate research budgets are available and well spent to maximize impact
  • Strengthen Cochlear’s regional (APAC) research partner network
  • Identify external innovation opportunities relevant to A&A in APAC and collaborate with the Strategic Investments teams
  • Create research funding opportunities to augment Cochlear’s research capacity, by attracting regional funding for projects well aligned with Cochlear’s corporate and Advanced Innovation research strategy
  • Support the CI Segment Program Manager to define the long-term segment vision and convert it into an R&T strategy spanning various horizons
  • Develop and maintain a deep knowledge of the CI market segment and its dynamics, by collaborating closely with Global Marketing
  • Develop specific initiatives to bring together Global Marketing, R&T and Product Development to inform specific chapters of the future R&T strategy
  • Plan and deliver the CI R&T Roadmap, including identification of cross-functional dependencies, resource allocation and alignment with Cochlear’s Product Development Plan (PDP)
  • Ensure efficient and effective transfer of CI technologies
