Description:

The Director, Communications is responsible for development of the Company’s strategic communications plan and execution of the plan. The role leads all internal and external communications for Seaspan Shipyards and Seaspan Marine Transportation under the umbrella of the Seaspan brand, with the mandate of promoting a positive corporate image for the Company targeted particularly at key stakeholder groups as well as fostering internal communications that build culture and support strategies, core purpose and values.

Responsibilities:

  • Develops the overall communications plan for Seaspan, by understanding the company’s overall business objectives and strategies and then performing duties such as seeking input from the leadership team and identifying the best communication vehicles, timing and practices for messaging that supports overall business objectives and strategies and a positive Company culture.
  • Promotes Seaspan’s corporate image as an outstanding leader and as a responsible employer both internally and externally through a variety of communication means. Internally, this includes written communications, use of the employee intranet, facilitation of townhall messaging and presentations, and other employee-related communications. Externally, this includes developing a public relations plan, preparing key messaging for press releases, acting as media liaison and/or company spokesperson, oversight of the company website content, coordination of trade shows and other events.
  • Coordinates with the VP Government Relations to ensure key messages and the Company’s strategic interests are represented in the communications strategy and plan.
  • In alignment with the Company’s strategies, recommends key messaging and content for all press releases, interviews, earned media coverage and other forms of external communications. Writes speeches, FAQs, and briefing notes for executive appearances.
  • Support the Manager, Stakeholder and Community Relations from a communications perspective for local events and general public and community engagement.
  • Oversees the design and/or coordinates marketing materials including advertisements, marketing brochures, promotional items, exhibits and photography for all client groups, ensuring a positive, consistent messaging of the Company is directed to the target audience.
  • Leads all aspects of the creative content and key messaging associated with a wide variety of internal and external company sponsored events, and attends these events to ensure smooth execution. Events may include charitable events, public relations, and various Seaspan sponsored special events, as well as townhalls and other employee events. The Director’s role includes ensuring Seaspan is presented in an appropriate and consistent manner and that any associated public materials are produced.
  • As part of the communications plan, attends community, government, and industry events as a company representative, and ensures key messages are developed and delivered on behalf of the company.Is accountable for Seaspan’s communications budget, which includes advertising, tradeshows, photography, print materials, website design and updating, and other related expenses.
