The Opportunity
Cochlear has an opportunity for an Embedded SW Platform Development Director based in our Sydney, Australia office.

In this role, the successful candidate will lead and drive transformation of the Embedded SW platform development team to efficiently deliver releases for an increasing number of product variants across our acoustic and cochlear implant product lines.

  • Drive and support the VP, Embedded Software on strategic and transformational initiatives in own team and across ES and R&D departments, that;
  • Grows our people and leadership capabilities to support a growing organization and a growing system complexity of our products
  • Improves processes and ways of working to tame the complexity of an increasingly interconnected and growing product portfolio
  • Drives new technology and innovation leadership to deliver solutions exceeding expectations of our customers
  • Supports our growth ambitions as a market leader in implantable hearing devices.

The Director, ES platform Development will act as a local delegate to the global VP, Embedded SW, in our Australian R&D location in relevant governance forums as requested.
Responsibilities include yet not limited to:
Strategy Leadership - define and implement transformative strategy for scalable ES platform development, this role is accountable for translating and implementing the ES department strategy for efficient and scalable development using approaches like product family engineering to ensure maximum reuse across product lines and variants.
People Leadership- mentor and build capabilities supporting growth, identify and develop technical and people leaders to support the platform development and Cochlear’s growth journey as well as identify future capabilities and skills required within team to ensure timely delivery of innovation against strategic priorities and to ensure robustness of team.
Results Leadership- Lead the deliveries of configurable ES platform releases according to agreed quality standards and supporting priorities in the ES portfolio across product deliveries and new (next) platform development, and continuously review ES portfolio plan and new platform development plans and update resource plans and forecasts.

In this role you will work with senior and executive leaders to drive strategy and impact of team deliveries and act as a representative of the global VP ES in our R&D offices in the APAC region as required.

  • Experience in leading large, embedded device development teams distributed across multiple time zones in electrical HW, embedded SW and/or SW area
  • Strong track record of developing managers and leaders to perform and take wider responsibilities in complex R&D organisations
  • Change Management Practice experience leading large-scale transformations (ideally combined with formal training)
  • Product development experience for safety-critical applications in a regulated environment, preferably in Medical Devices or other highly regulated industries such as Automotive, Aerospace etc.
  • Experienced working with Agile methodologies in large scale, complex new development projects
  • Experience in platform co-development alongside technology partners and outsourced design partners both locally and globally
  • Experience with stakeholder management of senior leaders to influence outcomes and strategic direction.
  • Ability to travel up to 30 days/year
