As we continue to expand and evolve internally, we are excited to share some new openings within our team. One of these opportunities is the Director of Legal Services. In this role, you will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Law branch, providing leadership and guidance to your team, fostering the growth and development of our staff.
Furthermore, you will play a crucial role in delivering legal and strategic counsel to the AER on sensitive and high-level matters. Collaborating closely with the Director, Law, Strategy & Operations and reporting to the VP Law & Associate General Counsel (AGC), you will address strategic and legal concerns vital to both the branch and the wider organization. Join us in driving these impactful changes and contributing to the advancement of our organization.

What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Provide expert legal and strategic advice on high-complexity and high-risk matters to all AER personnel, including senior executives.
  • Handle highly complex and sensitive files, leading small teams of lawyers and support staff to ensure effective collaboration and delivery on file requirements.
  • Approach matters with practical, workable, and innovative solutions, using your legal expertise to proactively identify and address legal issues.
  • Manage daily operations of the Law branch, providing leadership and supervision to a team of lawyers and support staff. Keep the Director, Law, Strategy & Operations informed about workload management and future resource needs.
  • Guide and support staff, fostering teamwork to ensure a cohesive working environment. Develop and mentor team members through coaching, training, setting objectives, and providing feedback.
  • Offer valuable input and recommendations to the Director, Law, Strategy & Operations and VP Law and AGC regarding succession planning and training opportunities. Implement internal training and learning initiatives as directed.
  • Ensure effective execution of branch plans and strategies while proposing innovative approaches and efficiency improvements to support overarching goals.

What we’re looking for in you:

  • Member in good standing of the Law Society of Alberta.
  • 10+ years of related experience practicing law, including at least 5 years as legal counsel to a regulatory body, in-house counsel, or appearing before the Alberta Energy Regulator or another Canadian energy regulatory agency.
  • Managerial or leadership experience (formal or informal).
  • Exceptional interpersonal communications skills for adeptly managing relationships and navigating sensitive situations. Leadership and collaboration are paramount, necessitating the ability to mentor, coach, and facilitate knowledge transfer with skill.
  • A strong critical thinker who can effectively communicate (written and verbally) regulatory and legal solutions to complex problems with ease, providing the supporting logic and complex analysis.
  • An agile, collaborative and team focused approach.

Additional Requirements:

  • SEC2 - This position will be subject to pre-employment background screening, including a criminal record check and a financial security check.
  • Minimal travel within Alberta required (for hearings, ADR etc.).
  • This role has a business requirement to work from Calgary.
