DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT SERVICES

Located on the east coast of Vancouver Island, Comox boasts a seaside location, mountainous horizon, and rich farmlands throughout the Comox Valley. The Town of Comox is seeking an experienced professional planner with management experience to join our senior management team as the Director of Development Services. Reporting directly to the Chief Administrative Officer and working closely with other senior managers, the Director of Development Services leads the planning, development, and building functions to achieve the overall vision of the Town and is responsible for directing and supervising the Development Services Department, which includes Planning and Building Inspection. The successful candidate will join the Town at an exciting time with the Town having just contracted with an outside firm to manage an Official Community Plan Renewal. The Town has also been successful in receiving up to $5.2 Million in funding from the Federal Housing Accelerator Fund which will be used to support the Town in implementing its recent Development Application Review and move towards a digital permitting system. You will be able, with significant consultant and contractor support, to help reshape the department and community for long-term success.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Proven leadership experience in a local government environment;
  • Master’s Degree in Land Use Planning from a Canadian Institute of Planners professionally accredited Planning program;
  • Membership in good standing with the Canadian Institute of Planners and the Planning Institute of BC;
  • Significant experience (8-11+ years) in a senior planning position, with considerable related experience at the management level in a local government environment;
  • Sound knowledge of budget preparation and control;
  • Leadership and supervisory skills and experience, including the ability effectively lead, coach, and motivate staff in a team setting;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, staff, Council and its committees, external agencies/government offices, and members of the public;
  • Demonstrated computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, and Excel) and relevant GIS applications;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License; and,
  • Current clean criminal record check.
