JOB/POSITION TITLE: Director of Finance
DEPARTMENT: Finance
STATUS: Exempt
REPORTS TO: President & CEO
SUPERVISES: Assistant Controller, Accountant, Database Coordinator, Volunteers
PRIMARY PURPOSE: As a key member of the leadership team, the Director of Finance reports to the President and CEO and assumes a strategic role in the overall management of Hawaiian Humane Society. The position is responsible for overseeing all fiscal and fiduciary responsibilities for the organization. The Director of Finance serves as the primary financial liaison with the Board of Directors and Finance Committee. This position is responsible for the development of the annual operating budget and plan, working in partnership with the leadership team and CEO. Responsible for accounting policies, internal control policies and IT policies. Supervises the Assistant Controller, Accountant and Database Coordinator. Coordinates directly with the organizations IT service providers. Meets with the Finance Committee Chair monthly and the full committee bi-monthly.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Skills/Knowledge:
  • High-level knowledge of accounting, FASB 116/117 and GAAP, nonprofit accounting and tax.
  • Experience working with legal counsel, investment advisors, and board members.
  • High level technology expertise.
  • Ability to think and act strategically, planning for the long-term while balancing short-term needs of the organization.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite especially Excel and familiarity with accounting software, preferably Financial Edge NXT.
  • Education/Training: Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business administration or other relevant field required. Certified Public Accountant preferred.
  • Experience:
  • Five years proven successful experience in financial management including experience with accounting, investment strategy, and risk management in a mid-size business with an annual operating budget of at least $10 million.
  • A minimum of 5 years in a supervisory role.
  • Experience with computerized accounting systems and information technology (IT).
  • Ideally, this individual has experience either as an employee or board member of a nonprofit organization and is familiar with nonprofit finance and accounting regulations.
  • Must have a valid Hawaii Driver’s License and insurable driving record.

Responsibilities:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/FUNCTIONS:

  • Accounting. Develops and oversees accounting and financial policies and procedures. Establishes and maintains effective internal controls to help ensure compliance with applicable rules and regulations and best business practices. Oversees the organizations 401K retirement plan and group life insurance benefits.
  • Financial reporting. Prepares monthly/quarterly financial statements for management, Board of Directors, Finance Committee, and other external users. Meets with department leads monthly to discuss financial results compared to budget (variance reporting). Responsible for the financial audit and tax matters related to the organization. Oversees and ensures compliance with contract and regulatory reporting.
  • Budgeting. Coordinates the preparation and approval of the annual operating and capital budgets with leadership/managers. Communicates budget strategies for the organization and makes recommendations to manage to the plan and/or reforecast.
  • Cash Management. Manages banking operations and relationships, cash balances and investment portfolio. Develops and monitors the investment strategy and performance of investment portfolio. Works with investment advisor to ensure assets are invested in accordance with established investment policy.
  • Administration. Responsible for corporate insurance programs. Serves as liaison to the City and County of Honolulu administration of City contracts/programs. Documents management processes and corporate archiving policies.
  • Legal. Ensures legal filings for federal, state, and agency documents are completed and filed in a timely manner. Responsible for reviewing legal documents, contracts, bids and proposals.
  • Leadership. As part of the leadership team, expected to propose changes to improve efficiency and effectiveness and assure financial stability. Communicates with the Board of Directors Finance Committee on financial and audit issues. Provides leadership and guidance to the finance team. Provides support and guidance to department managers regarding financials.
  • Information Technology (IT). Oversees IT operations in conjunction with third party IT provider and in house IT admin (Database Coordinator). Accountable for Hawaiian Humane’s technical operations and support systems.
  • Facilities. Provides strategic oversight to our facilities program across the organization. Supervises the facilities manager. Works collaboratively across the organization to ensure the organizations needs are being met from a proactively managed facilities program. Provides oversight to the facilities program to ensure compliance and OSHA related requirements are being met.

OTHER DUTIES/FUNCTIONS:

  • Represents Hawaiian Humane at special events, community meetings, conferences, etc. to promote and further Hawaiian Humane’s mission.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the President & CEO.
