Director of Operations – Urgent Care (Band 9)
The Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust is the main provider of hospital services for the population of Reading, Newbury, Wokingham and the towns and villages of West Berkshire. At our heart we are a local hospital that works with NHS and social care partners to provide excellent healthcare services for over 500,000 people who live in our catchment area. We also provide specialist hospital services beyond the county’s borders. We have an exciting opportunity to join our Trust as Director of Operations for our Urgent Care division. Reporting to the Care Group Director and accountable to the Chief Operating Officer, the Director of Operations will be responsible for the operational management and the delivery of our Urgent Care Group directorates performance ensuring that these clinical services meet national and local standards and patient expectations particularly around the delivery of Maternity National Safety standards, Actions from the final Ockenden Report and ED standards. They will take day to day responsibility and accountability for the operational management across our urgent care services, including: AMU, Short Stay, our Emergency Department, SDEC & OPE, Cardiology, Gastroenterology Ward, Gynaecology, ICU and Critical Care Outreach, Maternity, Paediatrics including Community Paediatrics, Radiology, Respiratory, Stroke, Virtual Hospital, Management of Emergency Planning Resilience and Responsive (deputising for Trust AO), lead our Site Team and act as Single Point of Access for our Trust.
In addition, they will play a key role in ensuring the Trust delivers on the full range of performance and finance targets and will lead the delivery of agreed performance indicators in relation to clinical outcomes and operational efficiency. There will be a strong emphasis on the need to embed staff appraisal and development of a culture of performance management and delivery, as a foundation for achieving our organisational objectives.

The Director of Operations (DoO) is responsible for the daily delivery of operations of the Care Group through the speciality directorates and accountable for the overall performance and financial sustainability of the Care Group.
The post holder will work with and ensure effective matrix working through the directorate teams, led by the triumvirates, to ensure the operational delivery of all clinical services. Specifically, the post holder will be responsible for providing leadership, ensuring safe, high quality and efficient delivery of the day-to-day operational management of the Trust, which meets the needs of patients, achieves set and agreed standards, financial targets and performance.
The DoO will lead the innovation and improvement agenda within the Care Group to embed a culture of continuous quality improvement and focused on ensuring value for money and highest quality of services for our patients.
