Description:

MAIN DUTIES Strategic Development Provide professional and operational advice and guidance at a senior level and expert advice to the Trust Board via the Executive Director of Nursing. Contribute and provide professional advice to specific projects, lead and manage designated work streams and projects as and when required. Provide effective midwifery and nursing input into the development of Divisional and Trust strategy and policy and the annual planning cycle. Provide expertise and support to the Divisional Director, Clinical Director and Executive Director in identifying drivers for change and opportunities for growing, improving and redesigning midwifery services and initiating implementation plans.
Support the Divisional Director and HR colleagues with workforce planning, professional development and clinical leadership across the maternity service. Together with the Divisional Governance Lead, support the Divisional Quality and Safety agenda. Together with HR, develop strategies for effective recruitment and retention Ensure all midwifery staff have access to continuing professional development/education and training including succession planning and leadership development. Deputise for the Deputy Director of Nursing- Acute & Operational Services as required and appropriate.
Represent the Trust on Midwifery and Neonatal Services at local, regional and national level as required. Participate in regional and national meetings as appropriate Maintain an up-to-date understanding of developments and changes in legislation, national policy and guidance that relate to all aspects of midwifery practice and ensure that senior Divisional and Trust Managers are kept up-todate and informed of the likely impact on services. Promote and maintain an evidence-based practice culture ensuring the creation of effective local and regional networks to share good practice and be responsible for wide dissemination and implementation of evidence Provide professional leadership and guidance for midwifery/nursing staff ensuring appropriate structures are in place that support midwives/nursing at all levels. Act as a role model for midwives/nurses both internally and externally.
Ensure compliance with policies, procedures and clinical guidelines and participate in their development. Ensure that appropriately trained and competent midwives/nurses and nonregistered support staff deliver effective care. Promote and support the AEQUIP model of midwifery supervision. Ensure midwives/nurses within the Directorate comply with statutory mandatory training and registration requirements, including maintenance of records of training and development undertaken.
Ensure that midwives/nurses comply with the Trusts standards for values and behaviours and address any deficiencies. Provide leadership to the Head of Midwifery and Matrons for each area and ensure that all midwives/nurses have clear goals and objectives, regular appraisal and feedback on performance as well as personal development plans Develop a culture that encourages staff to be innovative, creative and challenging in the interests of patient care and professional practice To be highly visible and approachable in clinical areas and available to respond to staff and service users by maintaining open and honest communication channels Promote the development and maintenance of high standards of care based on current evidence and within commissioned service specification to ensure that the care offered is family centred, sensitive and responsive to service users Prepare and present in a variety of formats, (written, verbal and formal presentations) to Divisional Management and Executive Management Teams as required Develop effective relationships with the Trusts Safeguarding Leads. To adhere to the NMC code of professional practice and ensure that all midwifery staff within the Division do the same. Act at all times in a professional manner exhibiting the Trust values and correct professional behaviours, modelling the way for others and leading by examples.
Participate in the Trust Nursing and Midwifery Leaders Forum taking the lead as required across the organisation on key identified work streams
