The Biological and Chemical Technologies Group addresses significant current and emerging national security challenges using advanced biological and chemical technologies. Capabilities within the Group include molecular, cellular, and synthetic biology; molecular and organisms engineering; bioinformatics; microfluidics; molecular analysis; and organic synthetic chemistry. These capabilities are applied to missions spanning chemical, biological, and explosives (CBE) detection and attribution; medical diagnostics and countermeasures; pathogen identification; point-of-care diagnostics; molecular intelligence; biosecurity; biomanufacturing, DNA forensics, and additive manufacturing. Job Description
The Biological and Chemical Technologies Group seeks a candidate to perform downstream processing and purification of products generated in biological fermentation and chemical reactors. The candidate will be responsible for designing and for implementing downstream processing and purification methods, working in concert with biologists and analytical and synthetic chemists. Extensive experience with bench-scale distillation systems and other downstream processing equipment is required, and expertise in scaling downstream processing and purification methods beyond to pilot production is highly preferred. Background knowledge of bioreactor or chemical reactor operation at all scales, and experience with their operation, is preferred. The candidate should be comfortable working in the context of an interdisciplinary research team and should show creativity in planning and executing studies as well as troubleshooting. The candidate is expected to contribute to multiple projects with different objectives.
Requirements: A Master’s Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree (with five years of experience) in chemical engineering, chemistry, or an equivalent science or engineering field. Experience working in downstream processing and chemical purification.
