EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Valid BC Shift Boss Certificate
  • BC Blaster Certification OR a Provisional BC Blaster License (3rd Class, 2nd Class, or 1st Class)
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ blasting experience in an open pit mining environment.
  • A minimum of three (3) years’ demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience in a mining or similar heavy industrial environment.
  • Prior experience in coal mining is considered an asset.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency using various software and applications.

TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES & SKILLS

  • Must be able to work 12-hour shifts on a 7x7 rotation.
  • Proficient in English communication, essential for clear and effective team leadership, safety compliance, and operational coordination.
  • Leadership, mentoring, and communication skills, vital for building a cohesive, efficient, and motivated maintenance team.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and meticulous attention to detail, enabling effective troubleshooting and maintenance strategies.
  • The ability to build strong relationships and foster a culture of safety, integrity, and teamwork, essential for maintaining a positive and productive work environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, alongside the capacity to quickly adapt to computer software programs necessary for managing employee administrative tasks such as timecards, vacation requests, and leaves.
  • Demonstrated stress and time management competencies, crucial for managing the demands of a dynamic and sometimes high-pressure work environment.
  • A motivational leadership style that encourages team engagement and drives the achievement of safety and operational targets, contributing to a positive work culture.

Responsibilities:

  • Directly supervise all mine drill and blast functions.

  • Strategically allocate crew and operators to achieve production targets in a safe and cost-effective manner.
  • Lead and conduct daily morning meetings to discuss priorities, safety topics, and operational updates, ensuring a cohesive and informed workforce.
  • Coordinate with the Mine Manager and engineering teams to ensure all drilling and blasting activities align with the operational plan.
  • Dynamically adjust operations in response to shifting conditions throughout each shift to maintain optimal productivity.
  • Oversee the training and evaluation of drillers and blasters in collaboration with the training department to ensure high competency levels.
  • Cultivate a strong culture of safety by actively involving the team in safety programs and ensuring compliance with all policies and regulations.
  • Approve blast pattern designs to maximize efficiency and safety.
  • Ensure cleanup of drill patterns to maintain safe access for drillers, blasters, and bulk trucks.
  • Work closely with the lead blaster and engineering to design and approve the safest and most effective tie-ins.
  • Review and sign off on all patterns post-tying and post-blasting.
  • Validate all supplier invoices for accuracy and oversee the forecasting of all required blasting accessories, bulk explosives, and drill consumables.
  • Monitor the daily bulk explosives logs electronically to ensure accuracy and optimal use.
  • Review all completed Blasting Reports and address any issues.
  • Keep accurate records of delays from the Daily Blasting Record and follow up as necessary.
  • Ensure timely completion, accuracy, and proper storage of all blasting documents.
  • Lead all incident investigations related to drilling and blasting, providing timely solutions and preventative measures.
  • Manage attendance and ensure accurate time and payroll recordkeeping.
  • Document crew performance and production metrics promptly and accurately.
  • Actively engage in and promote initiatives to boost employee morale.
  • Resolve, document, and escalate personnel issues as appropriate, maintaining a productive and respectful work environment.
  • Primarily work in the field, with some office duties as required to complete reports, plan activities, and attend meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.
