Drilling & Completions Co-op Student, Calgary (September 2024, 12 - 16-month term)
Reporting to the Drilling and Completions Engineering Team, the Drilling & Completions Co-op Student will develop their skills in project planning, project optimization, key performance indicators, collecting data, assessing results, and making recommendations to improve MEG Energy’s Drilling and Completions programs and procedures.
This role, beginning in September 2024 and for a 12- or 16-month work term, will assist in delivering safe and economic projects that include initial well design, drilling plans, testing, completion, and abandonment of SAGD wells and core-holes. The role will also support administering and overseeing service contractors and working internally with other professionals, such as Geologists, Geophysics, Drilling & Completion Superintendents and Production/Reservoir Engineers to prepare well designs, program field activities and monitor operations execution.

Your Day to Day will include:

  • Gain exposure to all facets of SAGD operations, with a focus on drilling and completions engineering.
  • Work daily with drilling and completions engineers to develop competency in drilling rig, service rig, coil tubing, wireline, and other routine wellbore operations.
  • Develop technical knowledge in wellbore design including the design of casing, tubing, downhole tools, wellheads, etc. Gain exposure to technical wellbore engineering design such as torque and drag, hydraulic modeling, thermal stress modeling, etc.
  • Prepare routine drilling/completion programs for field execution.
  • Advance KPI and data analytics of historical and real time drilling and completions data sets: collect, sort, and analyze data from multiple sources to advance drilling and completions optimization work.
  • Work as drilling/completions interface with Data Analytics team to develop spreadsheets/macros/Tableau data visualizations for key drilling and completions data.
  • Apply statistical analysis to drilling/completions data sets to observe trends vs outlier data.
  • Perform occasional field visits to observe and learn front line drilling and completions operations.

What you will bring to MEG:

  • Completed 2nd or 3rd year of studies in a bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited university. Chemical/Mechanical/Petroleum Engineering students preferred.
  • Engineering Student working towards a Bachelor of Science in Chemical/Mechanical/Petroleum Engineering with plans on working towards P. Eng designation.

  • Experience with an oil and gas operating company would be an asset.
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft suite of software with advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel
  • Coding experience in Microsoft VBA, R, Python, or similar to advance analysis of large data sets is considered an asset.
  • Previous experience in WellView and Tableau is considered an asset.
  • Effective communicator with the ability to promote cooperation and relationships across multidiscipline groups, both within MEG Energy as well as Partner Groups, Service Companies and Regulatory agencies
  • Experience working with diverse communities and groups.
  • Ability to perform field visits with periods outdoors in winter weather.
  • Ability to work with a diverse team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong multi-tasking, teamwork, and analytical skills
  • Excellent communication skills considering interactions with industry peers, operations staff, and other stakeholders.
  • Must be a self-starter, able to work with minimal supervision.
