What this role looks like
We are seeking a values-driven and proactive Driving Instructor to facilitate and deliver learner driver education to at-risk young people in the Drive for Life program. The Driving instructor will provide practical driving instruction and facilitate workshops that improve road safety awareness and learning.
Reporting to the Manager at Kalgoorlie-Boulder Youth Crisis Accommodation Service, this is a permanent, part-time (up to 32 hours weekly) position based in Kalgoorlie, WA. Salary and conditions are in accordance with SCHADS Level 4.

A day in the life of a Driving Instructor

  • Be responsible for the intake, assessment, and induction of young people into the Drive for Life program.
  • Deliver quality professional driving instruction and provide appropriate interventions and strategies to support the achievement of a provisional driving licence.
  • Create individualized lesson plans and provide clear instructions during lesson delivery.
  • Complete accurate assessments of student readiness towards achieving the provisional licence.
  • Be committed to working within a trauma and psychologically informed practice environment; supporting and prioritising young people’s needs.
  • Maintain vehicles and ensure they are safe and appropriate for driving instruction. Report any maintenance issues as they arise.
  • Acquire and maintain a good working knowledge of referral and support options for participants.
  • Work collaboratively and professionally with other services.
  • Be responsible for administration activities including data entry, contacting young people, mentors, and partner agencies as required.

You will bring

  • A valid and current Driver Licence.
  • A current WA Working With Children Check.
  • A current First Aid Certificate or willing to obtain one.
  • A minimum of 3 continuous years driving experience.
  • A certificate IV in Transport and Logistics (Road Transport: Driving Instruction) or similar nationally-recognised certificate or the willingness to work towards this qualification or alternative routes to becoming a professional driving instructor.
  • To pass a medical fitness standard for Driving Instructors licence.
  • To commute to Leonora and Laverton regions and provide driver education. This may involve overnight travel. This will be arranged by The Salvation Army.
  • Knowledge of work health safety obligations and you will put them into practice in the workplace.
  • Experience working with people from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background.
  • Experience working with people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and religions.
