The Office of the Chief Economist of the Middle East & North Africa Region provides guidance on strategic priorities and technical quality of economic analysis in the region. It aims to bring the best possible knowledge to bear on the problems of development in the MENA Region including through advising on country and sectoral strategies, quality enhancement of economic justification and analysis in adjustment and investment lending and developing and disseminating regional flagship reports. The office also serves as principal regional spokesperson inside and outside the Bank on strategic and economic issues facing the region.
The candidate will report to the Deputy Chief Economist and the Chief Economist.

Responsibilities:

  • Candidate will be expected to lead small teams of researchers in the conceptualization, implementation and delivery of flagship and semiannual reports in coordination with the Deputy Chief Economist and the Chief Economist. Contributions include academic style background papers and coauthoring chapters or sections of the reports on issues related to international trade and/or macroeconomics.
  • Establish cordial and collaborative relationships with MNA MTI/EFI staff, including Practice Managers, Program Leaders, and Country Economists.
  • Candidate will be expected to publish 1-2 academic working papers per fiscal year and maintain an active pipeline of research articles submitted to refereed academic journals. Periodic publications in journals are desirable. These research products are expected to be related to themes developed in MNACE sponsored Flagship reports, semi-annual economic updates, or other regional studies.
  • Contribute to MNACE’s macroeconomic monitoring of MENA economies.
  • Active participation in quality enhancement services on behalf of MNACE and MNAVP, including reviews of important operations where macroeconomic frameworks are important, such as DPFs.
  • Active participation in quality enhancement services on behalf of MNACE and MNAVP on major global WBG products, such as the GEP, WDR, research reports from DECRG.
  • Periodic contributions and research support to presentations, speeches, strategic operational presentations, blogs, editorials, and other communications products at the request of MNACE on issues related to international trade and macroeconomics.
