Description:

The post holder will provide routine servicing maintenance, repair, commissioning of medical equipment to Northampton General Hospital. Medical equipment covered incorporates electrical, electronic, electro-mechanical and mechanical systems including other related duties as specified by senior members of the EBME department.
The post holder will also support the EBME department by expanding their knowledge and gaining experience in the repair, calibration and maintenance of a wide range of medical, diagnostic, laboratory and therapeutic equipment through a rotational programme.

Responsibilities:

Carry out technical duties including commissioning, condemnation, servicing and maintenance of medical and electromechanical equipment.
To provide active support to colleagues within the Equipment Library service.
Play an active role in their continuous professional development.
Actively seek internal and external training opportunities.
Coordination of the servicing and maintenance of electro-mechanical, mechanical, electronic and electrical medical equipment to the relevant standards in a safe and sustainable environment.
Provision and guidance of inspection, servicing, and repair of electro-mechanical, mechanical, electronic and electrical medical equipment to statutory and non-statutory guidelines as recommended to ensure the safety, reliability and availability of such medical equipment .
Evaluation of new equipment, leading to the subsequent acceptance of the equipment by the department by:
Accurately and correctly interpreting technical data and relevant instructions of the equipment:
a) Setting up and testing the equipment against the required parameters, including electrical safety testing .
b) Confirming suitability and effectiveness of equipment
c) Confirming that equipment is ready for intended use
d) Accurately and correctly record the commissioning and test results in the correct manner.
Communicate in a clear, concise and proactive manner the understanding of any faults reported on medical equipment. Carry out an assessment of the seriousness and implications of the reported fault and ensure that the priority and the planned response is appropriate to the demands of the EBME Department and the Trust as a whole.

Analytical and Judgmental
Analyse complex medical equipment data and using own skills and knowledge make informed decisions and formulate possible solutions and recommendations for the continual improvement of the management of medical equipment in the Trust.
Ensure that all medical equipment no longer required has been decommissioned from the asset register and is disposed of as per regulations e.g. (WEEE, RoHS etc.) and Trust policies.
Proactively check the expiry dates of calibrated test equipment within the department and remediate any non-compliances.
Assist and support any medical equipment adverse incident investigations into the probable cause of equipment failure after an incident.
Communication
Proactively communicate to colleagues, medical equipment suppliers about medical equipment information which will include policy changes, new policies, guidelines and regulations.
Provide input where appropriate in any discussions relating to equipment management.
Communicate with suppliers and all external bodies as necessary using the most appropriate medium regarding the management of medical equipment.
Communicate with any staff representatives as required regarding medical equipment management.
Planning & Organisation
Plan, prioritise and organise a range of activities relevant to own work remit including those of junior engineers.
Provide support to the EBME Manager in medical equipment management across the Trust. Utilise and analyse data from audits and provide suggestions that may lead to improvements in the management of medical equipment
Policy, Protocol & Service Development
Contribute to medical equipment policies and procedures and support the implementation of any changes to these policies.
Ensure that all duties related to medical equipment management are carried out within Medical Equipment Management Policy framework.
Proactively make contributions to the development of written procedures for all aspects of work within the medical equipment management.
Responsible for ensuring that clinical staff are informed of and encouraged to adhere to Trust policies and procedures.
Responsibility for Information Technology
Responsible for the operation of all computerised information systems relating to medical equipment management which will include Safety Alert Bulletins, Medical Equipment database, Trust wide Medical Equipment Training and policies and procedures.
Responsibility for Research and Development
Provide timely information that will support medical equipment investigations arising from the Trust’s Clinical and Adverse Incident reporting system (Datix). Using own skills and professional judgement the post holder is required to find the root cause/s of medical equipment incidents and report these findings as appropriate. Using own technical skills proactively propose remedial action plan/s to prevent reoccurrence.
Other responsibilities
Provide cover for colleagues as appropriate.
Ensure that all tools and test equipment are maintained to the highest standards possible and that the equipment is stored securely when not in use.
Ensure own work area and the EBME department are kept safe and well ordered.
Where workshop equipment is passed to others to use, make sure that they are authorised and competent to use it in a safe and effective manner.
Participate and lead in discussions as required in a positive and proactive manner regarding the management of medical equipment.
Maintain and monitor technical documentation and test specification instructions.
Maintain own Continuing Professional Development.
Advise Trust staff, customers, patients, colleagues and carers on all aspects of equipment procurement, maintenance, operation and care
