TEAM & OPPORTUNITY

The Investment Strategy Group (ISG) is a global team that serves as Vanguard’s in-house thought leadership department, with subject matter experts based in North America, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region. The team produces industry-leading research to help shape perspectives and views on the economy and markets, plays a central role in developing Vanguard’s investment and advice methodology, and informs decisions about our investment offerings and strategies. As the Economics Team within ISG, we aim to discover, share, and apply breakthrough and timely insights about the various economies and markets to drive better outcomes for our investors.
We are seeking an Economist to conduct economic research to inform Vanguard’s differentiated view on the markets, provide cyclical coverage for our critical business partners, with the goal of improving investment outcomes of Vanguard clients. Your work will generate thought leadership with applications to Vanguard business, media, public policy, and the academic research community.
In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to work with senior business partners to articulate Vanguard’s views and positions and relay this to Vanguard clients.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Five years related work experience, including four years of professional experience in economic research or a related field, with a strong focus on the APAC region. Econometrics, top financial institute, central bank, or international organization research experience preferred.
  • Undergraduate degree in finance or economics or equivalent combination of training and experience required. Graduate degree preferred.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills, with proficiency in econometric software (e.g., R, Stata, EViews).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex economic concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Proven experience managing relationships with business stakeholders preferred. Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with business stakeholders within and outside one’s own team, including setting priorities, project milestones and timelines, and make timely adjustments in an evolving environment.
  • Experience collaborating in an international team environment desired.
  • Intellectual curiosity and a passion for generating and pursuing “big ideas” for “aha” insights through research.
  • Team-first orientation and openness to learning new ideas, skills, and ways of working with a diverse set of teammates.

Responsibilities:

  • Conducts analytical and empirical economic and financial markets research to address a wide range of topics that interest Vanguard clients and internal partners.
  • Leads the production and orchestrates the dissemination of recurring and ad-hoc economic outlook content and related research material related to the APAC region. Ensures related economics collateral is well documented and readily accessible.
  • Maintains the economics-related infrastructure of chart packs, tables, and models, to provide ongoing monitoring of the economic environment.
  • Stay abreast of economic and policy developments, to continuously provide timely in-house views, and improve analytical models and forecasts.
  • Acts as a trusted subject matter expert and internal ambassador across teams by providing briefings and updates on economic developments. Supports consulting services as required with internal partners, with an appreciation for business priorities.
  • Directly supports the development and provides direction to other economists and analysts, within and beyond own team.
  • Participates in cross-team debates and collaborations on Vanguard’s investment methodology. Develops recommendations on new research topics or methodology issues.
  • Participates in client, public relations, or other external-facing activities as assigned.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to enhance team research capabilities, such as new data sources or analytic techniques.
  • Participates in special projects and performs other duties as assigned.
