Description:

(13 WEEKS, SUMMER STUDENT)

Located on the traditional, ancestral and unceded lands of the Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh, and Musqueam Nations, West Vancouver is a vibrant community on the North Shore and home to parks, beaches, and to sports, recreation and arts amenities. We are seeking employees with a passion for public service who share our commitment to creating a complete, inclusive and livable community. Our dedicated staff deliver services, operate facilities and run the programs that enhance the well-being of our community.
The West Vancouver Art Museum offers a variety of programs for children and youth throughout the year, and during the summer months, the West Vancouver Art Museum offers programs for young audience through Art Museum-based summer camps and an off-site program during the District of West Vancouver’s 10-day Harmony Arts Festival.
The West Vancouver Art Museum is hiring an Education Assistant to provide hands-on, career-related experience for a student considering a career in art education and museum/gallery programming for young audiences. In July and August, seven week-long Art and Architecture Camps are held at the Art Museum, providing opportunities for direct engagement with artworks from the Art Museum collection, which are used as instructive models for art projects interpreting techniques, subjects, or themes. During the academic year, teachers’ kits, based on works or artists represented in the Art Museum collection, are used during off-site programs at local K-12 schools.
The Education Assistant will assist the Education Coordinator to develop and assemble new teachers’ kits for the coming academic year, based on items in the Art Museum collection. In addition, the Education Assistant will assist the Education Coordinator to deliver the Art Museum-based summer Art and Architecture Camps, and will independently develop and deliver one class each week on a special topic. These experiences will build skills and confidence for the student, who will then lead the development and delivery of an off-site afternoon program for children or youth for the Harmony Arts Festival.
The Art Museum relies on student assistance to develop and deliver core educational programs that provide unique opportunities for young audiences to engage in conversations about art, architecture, and design, year-round, at the Art Museum and in local schools. This position will provide hands-on, career-related experience for a student considering a career in art education and museum/gallery programming for young audiences.

The ideal candidate will:

  • be currently enrolled in graduate or undergraduate studies in Art or Art History, Architecture or Architecture History, or Arts Education
  • have experience using PC and Mac operating systems
  • be proficient using MS Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint to create, edit, and save documents, and Outlook to create, share, and manage e-mail and attachments

  • have excellent written communication skills, including an understanding of differences in writing for child, youth, and adult audiences
