Description:

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic surgical trainee to undertake an important role within our Trust. The aim is to enable you to develop competences and engage in formal training in medical education while gaining further experience in elective and emergency General Surgery. You will be key to enhancing the training of foundation doctors, core and higher surgical trainees and the wider multi-professional team.
These posts would be suitable for trainees with full MRCS (or equivalent) who have completed Core Surgical Training and have an interest in medical education. They will also be helpful if you wish to enhance your CV prior to applying to a specialty. One to one careers advice is available from our careers tutor. The posts are for one year.
You would be expected to study for a postgraduate certificate in medical education or equivalent. This will be funded by the Trust.
You will have a clinical commitment which will include OPD, theatre and on call commitments, with the intention of splitting your time between clinical (60%) and educational (40%) activity. On call commitment to be confirmed but will consist of participation in the registrar emergency general surgery rota. There are 15 slots on this rota which enables us to have 2 registrars on call during each day shift. Nights consist of resident shifts at GRH with an SHO and 2 F1s.

You would be expected to

  • Develop competences in medical education through studying for the Post Graduate Certificate. (This will be funded by the Trust.)
  • Undertake a variety of educational roles which could include (list not exhaustive):

o Undertaking educational projects with the Surgical Division and College Tutors
o Undertaking projects relating to technical skills simulation and multiprofessional simulation with the intention of achieving presentations at national conferences
o Work with the consultant body to develop local faculty
o Undertake teaching sessions for Foundation and Core trainees

o Continue to organise virtual teaching and journal club sessions

  • Develop further competences in General Surgery (subspecialty to be decided) by:

o Undertaking outpatient clinics with a supervising consultant.
o Undertaking inpatient work and operating lists in the specialty
