KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Participate in, and be present for, all First Nations Court and/orCknúcwentn Elders Justice Council meetings and court dates
  • Attend meetings, workshops, seminars, and conferences that relate to the Indigenous Court and / or client care, which is encouraged or recommended to you
  • Schedule and facilitate monthly meetings for Elders and invited guests to review the court list and new/old business
  • Submit monthly, quarterly, and annual reports using statistical data
  • Maintain accurate records of all expenditures associated with the Elder/Court Navigator role
  • Prepare and coordinate Elders for Court attendance
  • Prepare and provide accurate client information binders to the Elders in advance of Elders Meetings and Court dates
  • Coordinate transportation and meals for the pre-court and court dates of the First Nations Court
  • Participate in program audits and/or evaluations as scheduled by the organization
  • Complete required reporting detailing progress
  • Schedule Elder training, when required
  • Participate in the recruitment of Elders by assisting with interviews and applicant sourcing
  • Elder support including debriefing
  • Purchasing ceremonial supplies or program supplies as needed
  • Obtain and schedule appropriate mental health supports for Elders when required and/or requested by the Elders
  • Planning monthly elders’ lunches to provide an opportunity to debrief from court (occasionally planning a facilitator or subject matter expert to attend the lunch)
  • Research and collate contact information for a network of appropriate community resources for Elders to access when required
  • To be the first point of contact for the Elders on the day of court by arriving at the Court 30 minutes before Court is called to order
  • Respond to crisis situations using de-escalation techniques andensuring immediate access to medical services, providing counselling, or working with other community professionals to meet the needs of the Elders as required
  • Effectively utilize various agency systems and technology platforms
  • Perform other related duties as required including transporting individuals to court dates, probation meetings, and/or other important events when/if required

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Diploma in Social Work, Criminology, or a diploma in a related field; or a combination of related experience and education
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience or a combination of education and experience
  • Ability to adapt and learn new skills with an aptitude for judicial and / or social issues affecting Indigenous people
  • Experience working with individuals with a mental health diagnosis
  • Experience and familiarity working in an Indigenous led environment
  • An understanding of providing service to people with different learning abilities
  • Demonstrated and clear ability to respond well in crisis situations
  • Ability to communicate with legal professionals and individuals in a court room environment
  • Excellent time management skills that demonstrate the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated an ability to deal with potential violence
  • Demonstrated a strong ability to deal with crisis
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English

REQUIREMENTS

  • Criminal Records Checks
  • Emergency First Aid
  • Class 5 driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle while working
  • Fully vaccinated against COVID-19

Compensation

  • $29.17 - $33.49/hr as per collective agreement
  • Preference will be given to applicants who are Indigenous

Important: Candidates must be legally authorized to work in Canada, observe their weekly hours limit if under a temporary or study visa, and provide proof of eligibility if selected for the role.

Responsibilities:

This position will provide support and coordination to the Kamloops First Nations Court and/or by the Cknúcwentn Elders Justice Council. The Elder/Court Navigator will work collaboratively with the Elders, lawyers, council members, and Indigenous Outreach Worker, to support the purpose and mission of the First Nations Court.
