SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Studying to achieve a bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering
  • University Engineering student available for a work term beginning in September 2024
  • Currently enrolled in a University Engineering program and returning to full-time studies after the work term
  • Your most recent unofficial transcript(s) must be submitted with your application
  • Demonstrated leadership and strong academic skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS/ EXPERIENCE

  • Previous industry experience is considered beneficial, but not essential
  • Commitment to safety on and off the job
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English are required for all roles
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and in a team-based environment

Responsibilities:

WHAT ROLE YOU WILL PLAY IN OUR TEAM

Imperial is recruiting for an electrical engineering student at Strathcona Refinery located in Edmonton. Working under the guidance and mentorship of a staff electrical engineer and other discipline engineers, you will gain an understanding of electrical distribution and control systems by working inside a operating petrochemical plant. The role will be to support the maintenance and improvement projects for electrical equipment to ensure safety and reliability, while maximizing operating cost effectiveness. You may be required to give a presentation on the assigned project(s) at the end of your work term depending on the department you are working for.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Build an understanding of the refineries electrical distribution system including substations, switchgear, motor starters, relays, cable systems, and control hardware.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose failures to determine root causes for future prevention
  • Study equipment fleet health and identify vulnerabilities
  • Building short and long range maintenance plans by analyzing equipment run length, maintenance requirements, inspection intervals, and recommended repair/replacement timing
  • Preparation of electrical specifications to replace or upgrade equipment for maintenance projects
  • Understand what we do, how we do it, then find creative ways to make us more efficient!
