Description:

Lake Superior Consulting is seeking an Electrical Power Engineer to join our growth team in Duluth, MN; Omaha, NE or Pittsburgh, PA. This position is a hybrid work schedule.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the electrical engineering covering a wide range of industrial facilities projects. Project scopes are often multi-disciplined covering civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical works. This role will have responsibility for the successful delivery of each project through coordination of internal staff, external contractors, financial control, and strong management of change.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the electrical engineering and design of moderate to large sized industrial projects.
  • Be a key player and take a lead role in the building of a world class electrical power engineering group focused on the Energy Sector (Oil and Gas, Power Generation, Power Distribution and Transmission, Renewables).
  • Implement safe and effective designs for low, medium, and high voltage power distribution and transmission projects utilizing the NEC as well as industry and client specific standards.
  • Exercise considerable judgment and initiative in interpreting policy in the planning and implementation of major work assignments.
  • Work with project team to create all engineering and design documents and drawings, including calculations, one and three-line diagrams, protection and control schematics, communications diagrams, wiring diagrams, plan views, section and detail drawings and application of mark-ups for projects.
  • Specification development for the procurement, installation and testing of electrical equipment.
  • Significant design and design review responsibilities, engineering calculations, studies, detailed design, report writing, field investigations and direction of lower-level engineers and/or designers.
  • Mentor and teach lower-level engineers regarding the engineering and design of power systems.
  • Apply engineering application software to complete engineering tasks such as ground grid design, equipment sizing, conductor sizing, relay coordination, and electrical studies using ETAP or SKM.
  • Assist in proposal development including cost estimates and defining the electrical scope of work.
  • Communicate and coordinate project activities with project lead, customer representatives, and other stakeholders.
  • Manages changes in project scope, identifies potential risks, and works with the project manager to develop contingency plans.
  • Interact with clients, vendors, utility providers and contractors including business development activities.

Requirements:

  • BS in Electrical Engineering discipline from an ABET accredited university or college.
  • 7+ years of related design engineering experience
  • PE licensure preferred with the ability to be licensed in various states
  • Industrial electrical power system experience strongly desired
  • Experience in complex high, medium, and low voltage power systems including substation design (up to 138 kV preferred).
  • Electrical equipment upgrades, arc flash hazards analysis, switchgear, motor control centers, drives, service entrance, grounding, auxiliary power units, power distribution and transmission equipment is required.
  • Direct experience related to power plants and substation design is a plus
  • Strong aptitude in use of SKM Power Tools, ETAP, or similar
  • Knowledge in the application of the National Electrical Code
  • Experience interfacing with local electrical utility providers for service interconnections
  • Field experience supporting projects that are in construction a plus
  • Travel for this position is expected to be approximately 15% to include client meetings, site visits, design review meetings, and support for business development. Travel will usually be less than 1 week continuously.
