Umbra Engineering is made up of a collection of engineering and technical specialists in life safety, security, and fire detection and protection. Umbra works in secure and non-secure environments in virtually every building sector; from highly secure institutional facilities to hospitals, from shopping centres to airports, from mixed-use buildings to mines, and from universities to policing environments. Our team of specialized electrical engineers, journeymen electricians and industry trained field technicians provide industry leading design, engineering, and integrated solutions for reliable life safety and security systems.
Umbra is also an industry pioneer devoted to perfecting fire and life safety codes, participating in collaboratively writing the 2011 Canadian National Standard CAN/ULC S1001-11 - Integrated Systems Testing of Fire Protection and Life Safety Systems. This standard includes the requirement of an Integrated Testing Coordinator (ITC) who is responsible for the development and implementation of the integrated testing plan.
Since we are a sister company to Williams Engineering Canada, we have the capacity to execute large scale projects and to advise on engineering above and beyond life safety, security, and fire protection systems.
Position Purpose: Working closely with Umbra teammates (Senior Electrical Engineer (Registered Fire Protection Engineer), or Electrical Engineer, Project Manager or Technical Lead), assisting on various projects, and contributing to the technical competence and production requirements within Umbra. Provides exceptional customer service and coordination assistance with internal and external project partners (consultants, contractors, etc.).

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduate from a recognized technical program or have a minimum of 2 years drafting experience
  • May be working towards a C.E.T. or AScT designation

SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:

  • Effective organizational and time management skills in handling multiple projects, performing a variety of tasks, and meeting required deadlines.
  • Ability to represent the company to the staff, clients and community by ensuring the best image is presented.
  • Application knowledge of Umbra systems and programs (including MS Office 365, MS Teams, SharePoint, Deltek Vision, AutoCAD, Revit MEP).
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Revit MEP.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Senior Electrical Engineer/Electrical Engineer/Project Manager/Managing Director in providing our clients with finished projects in a timely manner.
  • Communicate effectively with the Senior Electrical Engineer/Electrical Engineer/Project Manager; this includes collecting and coordinating useful information.
  • Maintain a working relationship with other teammates.
  • Participate in discussions with client, as required.
  • May participate in basic field inspections and technical reports.
  • Store and retrieve documents appropriately on the Umbra network.
  • Coordinate data and information collected in useful form for the Project Manager.
  • Support the engineering design, specification and/or recommendations for a variety of the following:
  • Fire Alarm systems
  • Security systems
  • Life Safety systems
  • Control systems
  • Hazardous area classification
  • Low tension building systems engineering
  • Low voltage power
  • Commissioning and verification of fire and electrical systems
  • Electrical drawing preparation utilizing AutoCAD or Revit MEP, including appropriate use of layout, title blocks, Xrefs, line types, etc.
  • Plot and compile drawings for technical reviews and submissions to clients
  • Complete drawing revisions from Engineer or Senior Technologist’s review and mark ups.
  • Utilize existing and develop new frequently used standard design details.
  • May under supervision conduct site inspections and write reports.

  • Teammates are required to adhere to the company policies and guidelines as well as the company and client safety policies and practices in effect at any given time.
  • Have the ability to apply for a Federal security clearance in order to work on institutional projects as required.
