Job Introduction
An opportunity is available for Technician (Electric Vehicle Charge Points) to join us on a Temporary basis for a period of up to 12 months (subject to review). The location of the role can be flexible and will be agreed with the successful candidate but a flexible approach to travel across all 4 DNO’s is required.
This role is to support NGED’s ED2 business plan to electrify the fleet and improve the air quality in the communities we serve. This project will deliver 200 new charging bays at Primary Substations during FY25 and will mean our operational teams will always be within a 10 mile radius of an NGED owned and operated charger, and NGED will have built one of the largest private EVCP networks in the UK.
You are required to have grade A*-C/4-9 GCSE in English and Maths or Functional Skills Level 2 qualification in both subjects. In addition, you must hold a City & Guilds 2339 Level 2 or equivalent Level 2 qualification in Electrical Engineering along with SAP at 11kV with experience working at Primary Substations.

EVIDENCE OF YOUR QUALIFICATIONS WILL BE REQUIRED PRIOR TO APPOINTMENT.

  • Depending on experience, you may initially be appointed at a lower salary until all relevant courses and training are complete.
    If you are offered a position, you will be required to successfully complete a basic DBS check that shows any unspent convictions or conditional cautions.
    Main Responsibilities
    Join us on this journey by utilising your skills in the construction, maintenance and repair replacement of assets.You will be required to take responsibility for safety, work planning, performance and the issuing of safety documents up to 66kV.
    You will manage individual projects and report on the cost effectiveness and identify impacts on customers, the public and environment.
    Meeting contractors on site, setting up work instructions and responding to operational questions.You may also support and assist local technicians in the installation and commissioning of the connection.

Project management and auditing work with the option to step in to complete duties if required on the following:

  • Carry out network operations including the issue of safety documents (Limitation of Access & Permit to Work up to 66kV and Sanctions for Test up to 11kV).
  • Construct distribution substations, construct and alter overhead lines and associated plant. Install plant. Lay and joint cables up to 66kV. Terminate cables to plant and overhead lines. Install and connect services.
  • Locate, record and identify cables, repair and replace faulty and obsolete plant and cables. Connect generators. Carry out testing and commissioning on High Voltage assets.
  • Determine how specific works or projects are to be carried out, including consideration of time, budget and customer targets and constraints. Including evaluate outage requirements and write full switching programmes.
  • Carry out network operations and issue planned shutdown notices, make appointments with customers and assess the potential impact of a specific work activity on customers (minimising impact).
  • Exercise leadership in co-ordinating site activities, including on-site supervision and control of other team members, as appropriate.
  • Resolve customer complaints, wherever possible directly and refer difficult complaints to the Team Manager.
  • Comply with safety instructions, assess site risks, and take action to remove or avoid those risks.
  • Check the quality of own output and identify and request resources to improve individual and team performance
  • Issue work to contractors, and approve daily work sheets, carrying out quality and compliance checks

The Ideal Candidate
You must be able to work on your own initiative as part of a small team and be capable of making on the spot decisions as required. You will need good communication skills, a flexible attitude and be able to cope in pressured situations often working to tight deadlines. In addition you must have SAP at 11kV with experience working at Primary Substations.
The successful candidate will be required to hold a Level 2 City & Guilds 2339 and if not already attained will be required to undertake Level 3.
