JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

We are searching for motivated and talented Electronic Engineers to join our Electronics Systems Department (ESD) at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. ARL’s purpose is to research and develop innovative solutions to challenging scientific, engineering, and technology problems in support of the Navy, the Department of Defense (DoD), and the Intel Community (IC). The mission of ESD is to develop and maintain expertise in the research, development, assembly, integration, and delivery of specialty electronic systems for undersea applications. These positions may be filled as either a Research and Development Engineer or a non-tenure Research Faculty.
ARL is an authorized DoD SkillBridge partner and welcomes all transitioning military members to apply.

You will:

  • Design custom circuit boards and power electronics to support system functions
  • Develop software/firmware that is tightly interfaced to hardware in an embedded system
  • Debug and test hardware, software, and firmware using unit integration and hardware-in-the-loop system tests
  • Contribute to documents, designs, and specifications
  • Proactively seek professional development opportunities
  • Present to peers, management, sponsors, and stakeholders
  • Support other members of the team

Additional responsibilities for higher-level positions include:

  • Supervise the work of lower level staff and undergraduate students
  • Perform tasks of a larger scope and lead specific tasks within the project scope
  • Oversee the development of documents, designs, and specifications
  • Manage tasks of small or moderate size
  • Contribute to proposals, reports, and presentations

This position can be filled at multiple levels depending on your education and experience. Minimal requirements include a Bachelor’s degree or higher in an Engineering or Science discipline. Additional experience and/or education are required for high-level position.

Required skills/experience areas include:

  • Basic understanding of electronic circuits and components
  • Basic understanding of Microsoft Office Suite applications (Word, Excel, Powerpoint)
  • Familiarity of Electronics Test equipment – Oscilloscopes, Multi-meters, Function generators

Preferred experience for these positions include:

  • Specific domain knowledge in C/C++
  • Experience in MATLAB, LabVIEW, VHDL and/or Verilog
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Skills specific to the Xilinx Vivado Development tools and Xilinx System on Module
  • Object Oriented Design

Your working location can be hybrid on-site/work from home, located in State College, PA.

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is:
$76,700.00 - $129,500.00
