Responsibilities:

ROLE OVERVIEW:

The Elementary Teaching and Learning Specialist provides statewide leadership, coordination, and technical assistance for elementary-level standards, instruction, and assessment. This specialist is responsible for administering and interpreting state educational policy related to elementary education (e.g., ELA, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies); reviewing, updating, and supporting Indiana’s Academic Standards; coordinating the development of a menu of print and online resources focused on the improvement of elementary education; providing content expertise for the ongoing development and maintenance of assessments; working in partnership with other content specialists to align efforts; and participating in elementary-level initiatives, programs, and activities statewide.
This is a hybrid position that is based in Indianapolis. You will be required to be in the Indianapolis office three out of five days each week. The other two days can be remote.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES/DIRECT REPORTS:

This role may serve as a team lead for an assigned work group.

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Lead in the development, implementation, and maintenance of elementary instructional initiatives for students in kindergarten through grade 6.
  • Inform stakeholders about Indiana’s Priorities for Early Literacy and Priorities for STEM Education.
  • Research and analyze data to assist in policy and program management.
  • Promote innovation and best practices in teaching, with emphasis on instructional practices to achieve the Indiana Academic Standards.
  • Design, develop, implement, and maintain academic standards and supporting resources.
  • Provide content expertise for developmentally appropriate assessment of learning outcomes.
  • Ensure the alignment of assessment items to subject matter content.
  • Support the development and implementation processes related to grants from the Office of Teaching and Learning.
  • Respond to requests for information and assistance from the State Board of Education, the State Legislature, and other stakeholders.
  • Coordinate with the Communications Office to respond to questions from the U.S. Department of Education, media, field practitioners, other State Educational Agencies on issues related to K-6 education.
  • Provide professional development and technical assistance to school corporations and other IDOE divisions.
  • Maintain relationships with state and national educational organizations.
  • Assist the Division Director and Assistant Directors, as assigned
