The Saanich Peninsula Hospital’s (SPH) department of Emergency Medicine is currently looking for Emergency Medicine Physicians to provide locum coverage.
SPH is a 65-bed acute care community hospital with an 18-bed emergency department (ED) that cares for 31,000 patients/year, both pediatric and adult. SPH is the primary referral hospital for the Southern Gulf Islands such that the total population served is approximately 87,000. The ED is staffed by a dedicated, progressive, collegial group of 16 full time and part time emergency physicians, currently scheduled over 5 shifts/day with 12 hours of double coverage. Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Infectious Diseases, Palliative Care and Anesthesiology are available within the hospital during daytime hours, with numerous other Specialists in the community. Tertiary care support and consultants are 30 minutes away by road at Victoria General Hospital and Royal Jubilee Hospital. Laboratory services are 24/7, and Medical Imaging, including a CT scanner, operates 07:30 - 24:00 daily plus on call overnight. Physicians must be comfortable in a single coverage department without onsite Respiratory Therapy or ICU support. Affiliation with the University of British Columbia’s Island Medical Program provides regular teaching opportunities to medical students and residents within the ED.
Applicants must hold CCFP-EM or FRCPC Emergency Medicine and be eligible for full licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC. The group is actively seeking candidates with community hospital ED experience, flexibility in scheduling and availability to fill “crisis call in” volume and acuity work for the department.
