The Energy Sector Analyst will support the growth of our South Africa–based energy practice. This will include supporting studies related to grid integration and stability, support with preparing reports. The analyst will also support business development efforts, support senior staff with technical analyses, support with the writing of expressions of interest. The position will involve occasional travel to international locations to execute technical tasks in collaboration with local project personnel, project stakeholders, and clients.

Position responsibilities

Technical

  • Support senior team members on power system analyses covering load flow, short circuit, dynamic and transient stability, harmonics, protection, arc flash, electromagnetic transient switching and insulation coordination studies.
  • Assist in power system modeling using software such as PSS/E, DigSilent PowerFactory, ETAP, PSCAD, and EMTDC.
  • Support on the modeling of battery storage, wind and solar PV generation including master controllers.
  • Support with the automated power system simulation studies using scripting tools such as Python.
  • Support on analysis and interpretation of simulation and test data.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering such as BSc or BEng
  • Knowledge of Python programming language
  • Advanced IT literacy and numeracy skills
  • Ability to return to first principles and academic literature to resolve complex technical problems.
  • Adaptable and able to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Able to confidently build and maintain relationships.
  • A systematic, logical approach to problem solving.
  • Detail-oriented and careful approach to completing assignments.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively to meet deadlines.
  • Highly motivated to learn on the job and undertake training.
  • Willingness to travel internationally on occasion.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Strong research capabilities, using a variety of primary and secondary sources.

VALUED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Postgraduate degree such as MSc, MEng, or PhD
  • Energy sector experience in a technical role
  • Commercial awareness
  • Proficiency in French
