Description:

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: 0 to 2 years of professional engineering experience.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in engineering.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  1. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within manufacturing, mechanical and/or biomedical engineering. Some experience in at least some of the fabrication methods such as laser cutting, 3D printing, milling, turning, CNC, CAD/CAM is essential.
  2. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within materials science. Some experience in mechanical testing, characterization, electron microscopy is essential.
  3. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Must be able and willing to learn new techniques, procedures, processes.
  4. Ability to meet consistent attendance during regular work hours.
  5. Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors and customers face to face. Professional and effective verbal communication skills and good interpersonal skills with the ability to work and communicate with various individuals within and external to the university.
  6. Ability to operate laboratory equipment.
  7. Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.

Responsibilities:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Perform design, machining, prototyping or fabrication of designed components, custom parts, jigs and fixtures for mechanical testing or surgical procedures. Integrate or assemble components, custom devices, and machinery; and assist in validation of the performance of such machinery including positive and negative controls, reproducibility, sample size estimate valuation, trends and troubleshooting, and refining techniques into standard operating procedures. (50%)
  2. Support complex scientific and research programs related to area of joint replacement; analyze data, monitor and oversee experimental processes, and design and develop prototypes, specialized equipment, and/or systems related to orthopaedic device fabrication. Specific experimental studies will relate to the mechanical testing of newly developed orthopaedic concepts. (20%)
  3. Apply engineering methods and techniques, adjust and correlate data, determine errors in results, and follow the operation through a series of related steps to completion. Record results using appropriate software (Excel, Matlab, Minitab, Origin, etc.). Prepare and present results to supervisors. Optimize and troubleshoot procedures to comply with expected outcomes. (10%)
  4. Exercise judgment on certain details of the work and in assisting in making preliminary selections
    and adoptions of possible alternatives. Provide feedback on device production and design. (10%)

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. May be assisted in work by a technician or student helper (5%)
  2. Assist with reorganization of lab and offices, ordering of supplies and disposal of items. (3%)
  3. Perform other duties as assigned. (2%)
