Beginning Tuesday, June 11, 2024, Riviera Utilities will begin taking applications to fill a job vacancy for Engineer I, II, III. We are considering applicants with qualifications in the following range, salary commensurate with education and experience.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university in Engineering.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam or able to pass the exam within one year of accepting the position.
Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Driver’s License within 60 days of employment.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university in Engineering and three (3) years of experience in the electrical distribution or transmission field providing designs and analysis for the operation of an electric utility, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Two years in successfully completing projects.
Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam and is a registered Engineer in Training (EIT) in the State of Alabama.
Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Driver’s License within 60 days of employment.

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university in Engineering and five (5) years of experience in the electrical distribution or transmission field providing designs and analysis for the operation of an electric utility, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

2 years in successfully completing and overseeing projects.
Registered Professional Engineer in the state of AL or able to obtain registration within one (1) year of accepting the position.
Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Driver’s License within 60 days of employment.

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for preparing clear, complete and accurate detailed drawings related to the installation of new services or the upgrade of existing equipment. The Engineer I assists in more complex engineering activities such as overhead and underground distribution line design, permits and applications, easement acquisition, maintenance of Engineering files, records, drawings and other related technical support.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university in Engineering.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of electrical systems and current electrical industry safety procedures and work practices.
  • Knowledge of the National Electrical Safety Code, National Electrical Code, Riviera drawings and specifications, and list of acceptable Riviera material.
  • Skills with computers and application knowledge of spreadsheet, database structures, word processing, AutoCAD and distribution system load-flow/short circuit analysis programs is required, or is to be obtained within one year from date of acceptance of position.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment is generally in an office, with field work. Field visits are also likely and encouraged. FR clothing will be required anytime the employee is within the defined minimum approach distance. Frequent jobsite visits and construction oversight makes up approximately 50% of the total work.

Responsibilities:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs field inspections of electrical services.
  • Designs distribution systems necessary to provide electric services to single phase residential, outdoor lighting, and small three phase customers.
  • Assists in the design of distribution systems such as 3-phase services, UG and OH subdivisions, single residential services and system upgrades.
  • Obtains easements and deeds; makes required contacts with property owners for signatures.
  • Assists in the development of switching orders for both emergency and routine switching.
  • Meets with developers and individual customers to determine power requirements for new services.
  • Meets with developers and customers to determine power requirements for new services and resolve potential issues and concerns.
  • Verifies that equipment and installations are in compliance with applicable code requirements and specifications.
  • Works directly with the Electric Department Safety Superintendent to implement safe work practices and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs field inspections of electrical services.
  • Designs distribution systems such as 3-phase services, UG and OH subdivisions, single residential services and system upgrades.
  • Reviews and interprets outage data to aid in the planning for system improvements.
  • Uses load flow, voltage drop, coordination and other power system studies to help identify system improvements.
  • Performs arc flash studies on the system periodically to verify the hazard ratings on the system and personal protective equipment is sufficient.
  • Assists in the analysis of structural requirements for overhead Transmission and Distribution line design.
  • Works with the Electric Operations Department to ensure engineering designs and techniques are feasible.
  • Develops switching orders for both emergency and routine switching.
  • Meets with developers and individual customers to determine power requirements for new services.
  • Meets with customers to resolve potential issues and concerns.
  • Ensures that equipment is properly applied and operated on the Riviera System.
  • Trains employees on how to use new equipment installed on the system.
  • Assists in the development of Riviera Construction Specifications.
  • Verifies that equipment and installations are in compliance with applicable code requirements and specifications.
  • Assists with the interpretation of equipment test results and assists in the scheduling of maintenance and upgrade of equipment.
  • Works directly with the Electric Department Safety Superintendent to implement safe work practices and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provides technical support for electrical engineering activities assigned to them, as directed by the Chief Engineer.
  • Mentors and aids in the development of younger engineers.
  • Manages the Net Metering Program for customers who want to generate their own power through solar or wind, and sell back any excess power that they may have generated.
  • Works on projects or leads project teams that affect the operation and maintenance of the Riviera electric system.
  • Implements electrical system capital improvement projects.
  • Reviews and interprets outage data to aid in the planning for system improvements.
  • Performs load flow, voltage drop, coordination and other power system studies.
  • Analyzes structural requirements for overhead Transmission and Distribution line design.
  • Provides designs for system upgrades and additions.
  • Works with the Electric Operations Department to insure engineering designs and techniques are feasible.
  • Develops switching orders for both emergency and routine switching.
  • Meets with customers to resolve potential issues and concerns.
  • Confirms availability of service for customers who need a letter of availability to submit to the city or county for project approval.
  • Ensures that equipment is properly applied and operated on the Riviera System.
  • Assists in the development of Riviera Construction Specifications.
  • Meets regularly with the Chief Engineer to discuss projects, goals and the status of projects.
  • Works with the Substation Department to interpret test results, plan outages and maintain equipment.
  • Works with the Sr. Engineer or Chief Engineer to design and install new substations.
  • Meets with other utilities, as required, to review joint-use agreements, ROW issues and any other activities.
  • Works directly with the Electric Department Safety Superintendent to implement safe work practices and procedures.
  • Coordinates routine truck maintenance within the department.

ALTERNATE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (SCADA ENGINEER):

  • Prepares specifications for SCADA hardware and software.
  • Maintains all master SCADA hardware and software.
  • Maintains software/hardware associated with automated devices and related outage reporting equipment.
  • Trains appropriate personnel in operation and maintenance of SCADA, outage reporting, and communication equipment.
