The Opportunity:
WSP has a Co-Op opportunity for an Engineering or Geomorphology Student to join the Prairies and North Region’s Water Resources Engineering Group on a summer term in Alberta in a field role collecting and documenting data for a research project developing sustainable closure guidelines for the oil sands region.
The Water Resources Engineering Group provides a variety of engineering and environmental water services to many high-profile projects in the prairie provinces, territories, throughout Canada and throughout the world. Your role will involve one month of training and general duties, two months of field data collection in the oil sands region, and one month of data review and analysis in preparation for reporting. This role involves significant overtime work during the field season in physically demanding field conditions and working in remote locations.

What you can expect to do here:
- Assisting the completion of a six-week field studies program involving:
- Three 10-day shifts, with at a minimum of four days off between shifts;
- Working 12 hours a day;
- Accessing remote locations by foot, truck, Argo, or boat;
- Measurements of channel and valley geometry;
- Characterization of vegetation cover;
- Hand augering, soil classification and sampling, logging of soil profiles;
- Watercourse description/characterization; and
- Recording location information and photos.
Completion of training requirements for WSP fieldwork and specific field vehicle related trainings.Reviewing, processing and analyzing field data.

What you’ll bring to WSP:
- Studying in the field of Environmental Science, Geomorphology, or Engineering.
- Comfortable and with working long hours in remote locations.
- Experience with operating non-highway vehicles (Argo UTVs, and/or ATVs) and boats
- A class 5 driver’s license with a clean driver’s abstract.
- Relevant field experience.
