Description:

The main function of the building envelope expertise team is to investigate issues that alter the condition and/or performance of the building envelope. The problems are usually related to water and/or air sealing, the phenomenon of condensation, or the stability of the exterior cladding of facades. The expert team intervenes on all types of envelopes, for example, from heritage walls of mass masonry to recent envelopes incorporating the pressure-balanced modern rainscreen. Mandates for the evaluation of existing envelopes, as part of building renovation projects are also carried out in order to assist architectural firms. We operate mainly in the provinces of Quebec and Ontario, but also outside the provinces and internationally.
As a Building Science Project Handler, your primary duties will be to assist senior project managers in carrying out their expertise mandates. These mandates take place on new or existing projects which includes investigating the cause of problems that affect the performance of the building envelope and/or quality control review to ensure installations follow industry standards and design expectations. The candidate will work with the senior project manager to implement traditional and innovative investigative methods, such as evaluations of apparent conditions of facades, assisting with performance tests, carrying out exploratory openings and overseeing construction installations/repairs/restorations, etc.

This is a hybrid role requiring 3 days a week in our office in Toronto, ON.

  • Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team (internal staff, external consultants, contractors, and suppliers) to achieve the client’s objectives consistent with the scope of services to be provided.
  • Work with senior UL staff to deliver and exceed client expectations within the scope of the project.
  • Assist with construction projects, including but not limited to, investigation and restoration of building envelope components.
  • Undertake field reviews of both new construction and existing projects to confirm the construction of the building envelope assemblies is proceeding in accordance with approved mock-ups and design documents.
  • Assist in development of specifications and details related to restoration and new design projects.
  • Assists in preparation of reserve fund studies and building condition assessment reports.
  • Participate in coordination meetings and prepare site visit reports to generate action lists of outstanding deficiencies and track their resolution.
  • Maintain project records and documentation.
  • Create drawings using AutoCAD, Bluebeam and/or other software.
  • Bachelor’s degree in either Civil Engineering, Building Science, Architectural Science, or a Diploma in Architectural / Engineering Technology, or a construction-related discipline.
  • Good knowledge of all building systems such as architectural and building envelope assemblies.
  • Must have a minimum of 3 years relevant building science work experience.
  • Experience as a Building Envelope Consultant and/or Trade Expert considered an asset.
  • Must have the ability to work in physically demanding environments.
  • The candidate must be able to work individually or with a team, in a fast-paced environment.
  • Comfortable to work at heights with equipment such as swing stages and man lifts. “Working at Heights” experience would be an asset but not required.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook), and/or other software.
  • Ability to write technical documents along with excellent oral and written English language skills.
  • Must have the ability to effectively communicate with team members and customers.
