Reporting to the Senior Operations Engineer – Drainage, the Engineering Technologist Design (Drainage) is responsible for complex technical field and office work of a civil engineering nature at the sub-professional level. This position will perform technical reviews of designs, drawings, calculations, and reports to ensure compliance with City standards and requirements throughout the development review process; prepare civil design drawings/layouts and specifications; complete inspections, investigations, and monitoring work related to operating and capital projects for the City’s drainage infrastructure (e.g., dikes, culverts, storm sewers, creeks, etc.); provide project management assistance for operating and capital projects, collaborating with City forces as needed; assist with the planning, scoping, and prioritization of capital work; procure engineering and contracting services; coordinate with contractors, consultants, developers, internal/external contacts, and third-party utility companies; summarize information from technical reports and regulations for engineers; and handle enquiries and complaints from the public and others. The incumbent may supervise one or more subordinates on specific projects and will perform related work as required.
The qualifications include a Diploma in Civil Engineering plus sound related experience, eligibility for registration as an Applied Science Technologist or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Ability to use AutoCAD Civil 3D, ArcGIS, and PCSWMM is an asset. Sound knowledge of applicable engineering design principles, standards, and methods. Sound knowledge of municipal engineering practices, procedures, functions and of the rules and regulations applicable to the section’s functions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts and handle enquiries and provide technical information and assistance. Ability to prepare, read, and interpret plans, specifications, contract documents, and related materials. A Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia is required.
