POSITION SUMMARY:

The Michigan Refining Division ES&S Department is looking for a highly motivated individual to fill the role of Environmental Professional at the Detroit Refinery. The successful candidate will lead and support the development, implementation, and monitoring of programs and policies to ensure compliance with federal and state environmental regulations.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or GED required with 5 years of relevant environmental experience in process industry (e.g., refining, midstream, petrochemical, or other heavy industrial), or
  • Bachelor’s degree in a HES-related field with no relevant experience, or
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with no relevant experience required
  • Education must be obtained/completed prior to start date.

SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of environmental regulations including Title V air permitting, NSPS, and MACT.
  • Working knowledge of other environmental programs, such as SPCC, NPDES, and RCRA.
  • Ability to critically analyze data to recognize patterns or deviations. Experience with PI Asset Framework is a plus.
  • Ability to work well and communicate with a variety of individuals including field personnel, management team, and regulators.
  • Ability to manage and shift priorities to support site operations and ensure regulatory deadlines are met.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Professional Level 1 (P1)

  • High School Diploma or GED required with 5 years of relevant environmental experience in a process industry (e.g. refining, midstream, petrochemical or other heavy industrial); or Bachelor’s degree in a HES related field with no relevant experience; or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with no relevant experience
  • Conceptual knowledge of environmental compliance and regulatory framework

Professional Level 2 (P2)

  • High School Diploma or GED required with 10 years of relevant environmental experience in a process industry (e.g. refining, midstream, petrochemical or other heavy industrial); or Bachelor’s degree in a HES related field with 5 years relevant environmental experience; or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with 2 years relevant environmental experience
  • Ability to monitor compliance with environmental regulations
  • Ability to develop business acumen and technical knowledge

Professional Level 3 (P3)

  • High School Diploma or GED required with 15 years of relevant environmental experience in a process industry (e.g. refining, midstream, petrochemical or other heavy industrial); or Bachelor’s degree in a HES related field, Engineering degree, or advanced degree with 7 years relevant environmental experience
  • Detailed knowledge on current and proposed environmental rules and regulations with the ability to communicate impact plans to local leadership for budget development
  • Ability to review engineering designs and specifications to ensure compliance with appropriate environmental rules and regulations
  • Comprehensive knowledge of facilities and relationships with environmental rules and regulations with the ability to initiate steps that will avoid reoccurrence of environmental problems

Professional Level 4 (P4)

  • High School Diploma or GED required with 15 years of relevant environmental experience in a process industry (e.g. refining, midstream, petrochemical or other heavy industrial); or Bachelor’s degree in a HES related field, Engineering degree, or advanced degree with 7 years relevant environmental experience
  • Detailed knowledge on current and proposed environmental rules and regulations for the component with the ability to communicate impact plans to upper leadership for budget development
  • Ability to advocate on the local and state level regarding environmental legislation developments
  • Ability to serve as a technical expert to State Government Affairs in contact with elected officials
  • Recognized as a Company expert in discipline

Professional Level 5 (P5)

  • High School Diploma, GED, or Associates degree with 25 years of relevant environmental experience in a process industry (e.g. refining, midstream, petrochemical or other heavy industrial); or Bachelor’s degree in a HES related field, Engineering degree, or advanced degree with 20 years relevant environmental experience.
  • Recognized as a Company expert in discipline and leading industry expert
  • Detailed knowledge on current and proposed environmental rules and regulations across multiple components with the ability to communicate impact plans to upper leadership for budget development
  • Ability to advocate on behalf of the Company with environmental regulations, regulatory agency actions, and international standards while also representing industry trade groups
  • Ability to serve as a technical expert to Federal Government Affairs in contact with elected officials

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a technical expert for environmental air programs. Technical activities may include Title V air permit implementation and compliance tasks, including but not limited to stack testing, continuous emission monitoring systems (CEMS), continuous opacity monitoring systems (COMS), environmental performance tracking and/or other programs as assigned.
  • Participate on cross-functional teams to develop, integrate, and maintain environmental programs refinery-wide to achieve environmental compliance and site performance goals.
  • Develop environmental programs, procedures, and manuals. Develop and provide training to various departments including operations, maintenance, and engineering.
  • Review refinery projects for regulatory applicability and compliance.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with regulatory agencies and provide required verbal and written reports.
  • Lead and participate in environmental audits and incident investigations. Develop and implement corrective actions.
  • Provide rotational on-call support to 24/7 operating facility.
