BAE Systems is seeking a Hudson NH New England Sr. Principal Systems Engineer II EO/IR Subject Matter Expert (SME) and individual contributor in the field of Free Space Optical and Laser Communication Techniques and Active Electro-Optical (EO) Infrared (IR) Systems. You will be joining a growing and dynamic group of engineers developing leading edge capabilities in laser communications, active countermeasures, and passive sensing. You will serve as a technical contributor and as a technical leader of a growing Systems Engineering Capability Group. You will be helping to align staffing and technical resources for the program execution of design, development, integration, implementation, test and verification/validation of EO/IR Countermeasures and Sensor/Seeker development supporting passive electro optical and active laser communications products across multiple business areas.
You will perform in the role of SEIT Lead SME and be responsible for bringing technologies to bear on next-generation military or commercial applications. You may also be performing as the Systems Analyst for active laser and/or passive EO/IR Systems Engineering, and for programs ranging from Strategic Initiatives, IRAD/CRAD research and development prototypes, EMD units, LRIP units to full rate production systems.
As a Technical Leader, you will also work with other engineering staff & team Leaders to grow and capture our knowledge through engineering changes, lessons learned, insights, Agile Retrospectives and product/process improvements in your area(s) of expertise.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, & SKILLS

  • US Citizen with active Top Secret/SCI. Eligible for a SAP/SAR
  • BS in EE, Physics, Lasers, Optics, Systems, or equivalent with 12+ years of experience; or MS in EE, Physics, Optics, or equivalent with 10+ years of experience
  • Expert in innovative active laser communications and passive infrared sensor system design, development and production
  • Develop information that extends knowledge in the field of free-space communications in the EO domain. Apply this knowledge to the development of advanced concepts, techniques, products or standards in free-space optical communications
  • In-depth working knowledge of optical communications theory, techniques, components, and systems across the electromagnetic spectrum; optical sources including lasers and laser diodes; optical modulators and demodulators; protocols and information theory; atmospheric transmission and modeling; conducting of complex trade studies involving active sensors, optical designs, link budgets, SWaP, and environmental constraints; performance testing of EO components, sub-systems, and complete systems
  • Modeling and simulation relevant to EO/IR laser sensors and weapon systems, including the development of high-fidelity digital system models
  • Highly knowledgeable in major facets of active laser sensor design/development including optics, optics assembly, stray light assessment, lasers & laser alignment, thermal heat management, Military-Specification compliance, sensor & laser seeker performance modeling and laser sensor testing of space & airborne EO/IR Systems through multiple phase of flight life cycle (to include launch, midcourse, detection, acquisition and terminal guidance end-game)
  • EO/IR high-power laser left Vee (reuse development) & right Vee (sustainment) experience and includes subsystems like laser Counter Measures (range gating), optics (coatings), laser transmitter/receiver (SW&P-C) subsystems and power management subsystems
  • Building and leading innovative, high-performance teams for technology development
  • Verification and validation of Military-Specification requirements
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills including communication with internal and external management and senior-level customer representatives
  • Developing information that extends knowledge in the active laser EO/IR domain and applying this knowledge to the development of advanced concepts, techniques, products, processes or standards in active and/or passive EO sensing
  • Acting as a technical senior advisor to Senior Leadership Teams to support program & products, technical teammates and management as well as for customers in making key technology trade-off decisions
  • Working with other experienced team leaders and technical specialists in the EO/IR domain, supporting team growth

PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, & SKILLS

  • Optical communication systems, photonic integrated components, electronic (integrated) circuits, and signal analysis and processing
  • Optical signal demodulation, clock and data recovery methods and algorithms, as well as coding and forward error correction algorithms
  • Modeling and performing coherent signal processing on waveforms, and measuring bit-error rate performance in the presence of optical noise and other impairments
  • Optical communication receivers including coherent I-Q demodulation, delay line interferometers, and intensity modulation waveform detection both with and without pre-amplification
  • Optical communication transmitters
  • Hands-On interface understanding and experience with moving signals from the DSP electrical domain to the EO/IR optical domain
  • Working knowledge of Chief Engineering roles and responsibilities to include serving an technical point-of-contact to the customer(s) in support of the PM, Program Engineering Leader, Program Engineering Managers and Functional Leadership while providing technical stewardship of engineering over the entire program
  • Serve as the decision authority between System Architect and entire engineering team while realizing the baseline system design and while reaching agreed upon viable technical closure
  • Deliver the Solution (the “System”) meeting Customer Programmatic & Technical Requirements within allocated Engineering cost & schedule
  • Working knowledge of active sensing techniques, components, and systems across the electro optical spectrum from UV to RF; characteristics/solutions, atmospheric transmission and modeling; conduct of complex trade studies involving sensors, optical designs, link budgets, make/buy decisions, SWaP-C, and environmental constraints; including performance testing of EO/IR components, sub-systems, and complete systems
  • Working knowledge of active laser sensing theory and techniques of components and systems across the electro optical spectrum from NIR to LWIR; atmospheric transmission and modeling
  • Ability to efficient & effectively conduct complex trade studies involving sensors, optical designs, link budgets, make/buy decisions, SWaP-C, and environmental constraints, including performance modeling, simulation, demonstration and testing of EO/IR components, sub-systems, and complete systems
  • Working knowledge of requirements analysis, requirements compliance and trade-off study for active laser and passive sensing EO/IR designs and effectively/efficiently converting stakeholder definition to architectural design
  • Working knowledge of Systems Engineering and life cycle processes stages and process milestone execution decision gating reviews
  • Bid and proposal experience on major life cycle programs
  • Experience working & contributing independently with limited supervision and interacting effectively with other technical team-mates to achieve product and process technical goals while inspiring technical excellence
