Description:

ABOUT YOU

You will have a strong customer focus, and the ability to communicate effectively, confidently and courteously. You will be able to work effectively as part of a team, and to prioritise work in a busy library environment. A good level of IT literacy including the use of Microsoft Office applications is important, as well as the ability to undertake routine library tasks with care and accuracy. These roles involve lifting, carrying and shelving books, using ladders and kick stools, and pushing trolleys.

HOW TO APPLY

You will be required to upload your CV and a supporting evidence form using the attached template as part of your online application. Your supporting evidence form should list each of the essential and desirable selection criteria, as listed in the job description, and explain how you meet each one. Please specify in your supporting evidence form whether you are interested in one or both of these patterns. Applications that do not include both a CV and supporting evidence form will not be considered.
We aim to provide a supportive working environment and are happy to discuss training and professional development opportunities. The Chair of this recruitment panel will be Colin Walker, who can be contacted with enquiries relating to the role (colin.walker@bodleian.ox.ac.uk). General queries about the recruitment and application process should be directed to the Recruitment team within our Human Resources department (recruitment@glam.ox.ac.uk).
Only applications received online by 12.00 midday (BST) on Wednesday 17 July 2024 can be considered. Interviews are expected to take place during the week commencing Monday 5 August 2024

Responsibilities:

We are recruiting for two part-time Evening & Weekend Library Assistants to join our library team. The Bodleian Art, Archaeology & Ancient World Library is one of the University of Oxford’s principal research libraries, with collections focused on these named subject areas (inclusive of Classics, Egyptology & Ancient Near Eastern Studies, and Architecture). Along with the Taylor Institution and Nizami Ganjavi Libraries, the Art Library is part of Section 3 of the Bodleian Libraries’ Humanities Libraries, and the three libraries work together as a group to provide services. You may be asked to provide cover at one of the other two libraries within the section from time to time, or other Bodleian Humanities Libraries in exceptional circumstances.
As an Evening & Weekend Library Assistant, you will be part of our Reader Services team. Your duties will include staffing the Issue Desk and Lodge, assisting readers, and working with both the University’s online library catalogue (SOLO) and the automated library management system (Alma). You will also fetch and re-shelve books, scan extracts of texts for our Scan & Deliver service, and assist with projects such as the transfer of books to the offsite storage facility.

The posts are both part-time, permanent positions, working one of two patterns:

  • Pattern 1: Tuesdays (17:00-21:15) & Sundays (10:45-19:15) – 12.25 hours per week (0.3356 FTE)
  • Pattern 2: Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays (17:00-21:15) – 12.75 hours per week (0.3493 FTE)

This role requires lifting and carrying boxes of library materials, pushing trolleys, climbing ladders and kick-stools in order to access some of the library’s bookshelves and to re-shelve materials.
