About us
As a department our purpose is to help the community to prevent, prepare for, respond to and recover from the impact of fire and emergency events.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) is the primary provider of fire, rescue and emergency management programs and services throughout Queensland. The department encompasses the Fire and Rescue Service, disaster management services, the Rural Fire Service, and the State Emergency Service, and supports other volunteer groups providing emergency response to Queenslanders.
Purpose of role
The Community Engagement unit sets and drives the strategic direction for community engagement and education in QFES. The team is responsible for providing strategy, policies, and resources to ensure a contemporary and consistent approach to community engagement and education. They work in conjunction with other teams across the department and external stakeholders to ensure Queensland communities are engaged in a meaningful way about fire safety, and other matters relevant to QFES through designing and facilitating education and training programs to educate and build community capability to prevent, prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergency events.
Reporting to the Director, you will be responsible for the strategic planning and management of a community engagement strategy on behalf of QFES. You will lead and manage a team responsible for the development, monitoring and implementation of statewide resources, systems, tools, and processes to support programs and practitioners in the delivery of adaptive contemporary community engagement practices and integration of best practice models to engage, educate and build awareness of the departments community safety goals. This role will drive project outcomes through effective people management and high-level stakeholder engagement.

- Qualifications or formal training in portfolio, program, change and/or project management is highly desirable.
- Experience in community engagement methodologies and practice, such as IAP2.
Your key accountabilities
Your part in the ongoing success of our department, in supporting key frontline services will see you responsible for a variety of work, including, but not limited to:
- Lead and manage the planning, development, and evaluation of strategic policy, frameworks, and programs to ensure effective delivery of services and proactive implementation of QFES’ community safety initiatives.
- Lead and the delivery of change management, project management and project delivery services for transformation initiatives, including impact assessments in partnership with business leads to enhance service delivery and address emerging challenges in fire prevention and emergency response.
- Provide strategic advice to senior management and key stakeholders relating to contemporary and emerging community engagement issues, trends, tools, platforms, and approaches to enhance community outreach and support effective decision making.
- Build and sustain partnerships and networks with key internal and external stakeholders to assist with meeting organisational objectives and contribute to effective community engagement and education programs.
- Manage and coordinate statewide data analysis and reporting, including the development and maintenance of print media, tools and resources for education and awareness to support programs and practitioners with the delivery of training.
- Prepare and review complex reports, briefing notes, submissions, and correspondence relating to community engagement and education program, in accordance with departmental requirements and governance.
- Lead and manage the development and review of strategies, policies, tools, and procedures to ensure a consistent approach to community engagement and education.
- Lead and Manage a multi-disciplinary team, fostering positive teamwork, through effective human resource, budgets and financial management practices, including the ongoing development of staff through performance planning and review.
