WHAT YOUR JOB WILL BE LIKE

We are looking for a dedicated and energetic individual to join our Facilities Management team as a Facilities Mechanical Engineer (Job Title Mechanical Engineer). Our engineering organization has responsibilities in engineering, operations, planning, and project execution. Our fast paced, National Laboratory setting necessitates that the candidate be comfortable with ambiguity and variability of assignment and accept the value of being in a service group. We seek a well-rounded individual, adept at problem solving in a variety of settings. Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Develop and/or contribute to development of project studies, plans, schedules, and estimates
  • Lead or be a part of a multi-disciplined group to perform engineering calculations, design construction drawings, and develop specifications for construction packages to meet customer requirements, relevant building codes, environmental regulations, safety regulations, and corporate standards
  • Review plans for constructability and completeness as well as improve cost effectiveness and customer satisfaction
  • Manage construction progress in accordance with design requirements, codes, customer needs, and site standards via interfaces with external, internal, contracted resources, for the completion of construction work in compliance with established site standards, codes, scope, cost, and schedule
  • Assess Mechanical building and utility systems and site infrastructure issues, conceptualize potential solutions, make recommendations, and provide technical direction for operations, energy efficiency, conservation, and optimization
  • Enhance preventive maintenance procedures, and perform Mechanical systems asset management surveys
  • Perform as Mechanical systems single point of contact subject matter expert and provide technical direction to engineering, operations, planning, and project execution

QUALIFICATIONS WE REQUIRE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or other relevant field plus five or more years of relevant experience
  • Experience performing designs and/or operating potable water systems, piping and plumbing systems, specialized gas piping, heating and air conditioning systems and controls, and/or site infrastructure
  • Knowledge and understanding of current International Building Code (IBC) and California Mechanical, Plumbing, Building, and Energy Efficiency Codes
  • Ability to manage projects from concept through design, construction, and closeout
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance

QUALIFICATIONS WE DESIRE

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Professional Engineer license (PE) in the State of California or ability to obtain certification within one year of hire
  • Detailed knowledge of mechanical industry and ability to produce specifications for bid purposes
  • Ability to think critically and make decisions requiring engineering judgment
  • In-depth knowledge and experience with California Building Codes (CBC)
  • PMP certification from the Project Management Institute or demonstrated ability to manage projects from concept through design and construction
  • Ability to interact effectively at all levels of the organization with both internal and external customers
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, including the ability to successfully plan, organize, lead, and monitor team efforts to completion
  • Experience with sustainable design and acquiring Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification
  • Knowledge / experience in facilities design, construction, and O&M industry best practices and standards

NNSA REQUIREMENTS FOR MEDPEDS

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date
